Belmont/ Mill Hill - WL movement

Hello all! Any insights on whether you expect the waiting list to move in the coming days for Belmont 11+? DC is top of WL2 but I understand that the school doesn’t always go into WL2.

I know a few families on it last year. Both the kids got a space within 3 weeks of National Offer Day I believe. They were both on the second waitlist for Belmont.

Thank you! Gives some hope

WL does move, but i also know people who were on WL1 last year who never got spaces... definitely worth contacting school to tell them you would take a place if offered...

EKLondon23 · 03/03/2023 10:37

Thank you! Yes I did tell them of our strong interest! They did indicate that WL2 could move in the summer term, but by then we are liable 1 term of tuition in another school so that’s a no go.

Best of luck, it's a great school, we've been really happy with it

London1305f · 03/03/2023 15:48

Good luck, my DC is very happy there, as are we as parents!

Honestly I think much depends on how much you stay in touch with the registrar. There are a lot of kids who use it as a backup and maybe that's why some off WL1 didn't get in last year. I know for sure the two kids I know were low on WL2 and got in and are very happy. Their parents made it clear to the school they'd accept a place as soon as it was offered.

ificould · 04/03/2023 08:11

Dodgeitornot in my friend's situation. they did all these things with the admissions people and the HT. they very much wanted an offer.
Myself and the other parent were trying to be supportive of the OP who would clearly like a place at Belmont, so your disparaging comment that it is a "back up" won't be of much comfort or support to her i am sure.

Dodgeitornot · 04/03/2023 08:39

@ificould How is it a disparaging comment? I've literally said nothing negative Belmont. I know two very happy kids there and another at Mill Hill. I mentioned the fact it's a backup as it means the waiting list does move a lot. So actually I do think my comment helps and is very relevant. I get it might not feel nice to hear your kids school is a backup but it's surrounded by very very academic schools and it does get used as a backup, that's a well known fact. It doesn't make it a bad school! There is no need to be snarky, I am just trying to give the OP some hope based on a situation that I witnessed last year.

ificould · 04/03/2023 09:48

it is interesting that you see it that way. i have 2 other children in the so called "very academic schools" in the area. Genuinely Belmont and Mill Hill are as good, in some ways better and certainly more enjoyable schools for even the most academic DCs.
I know the wait list moves, and I hope OP's DC gets their offer which is all that is important in this thread

Dodgeitornot · 04/03/2023 11:55

@ificould I'm really confused why you're suprised. It's a well known fact that it's used as a backup for kids applying to Highgate, UCS, Habs etc. It's not a hidden secret and certainly doesn't make it a bad school. The fact that calibre of kids are using it as a backup proves it's a good school surely. Of course their teaching is good and might be better, they cater to a much wider ability range and do it very well. I know Mill Hill can be patchy but it's improving.
What I find interesting is how personally you've taken my comment that's actually very relevant to OPs question, and twisted my words when I've not said a single negative thing about the school. You sound really insecure.
A backup school doesn't mean its bad and it's really relative. For some kids it'll be an aspiration school, many of which will be stuck on the WL whilst other kids stuck on a Highgate WL will be holding a place at Belmont.
A bad school is simply not even in the running for most people that are financially responsible so Belmont wouldn't be this popular if it was bad, but it is a backup school for many in that mad N London bubble, where kids are applying for 5+ schools.
Naturally at a school like Belmont the WL is more likely to move quicker than at Highgate or UCS. And that's an important point to know when your child is on that waiting list.
I don't know if it's relevant OP, but both the kids I know that got in from WL2 last year, have siblings at Mill Hill.

Thanks for responses and didn’t mean to start such a discussion with the post :)

There is a right school for every child!
