If anyone has children who are studying the IB (or have studied the IB) at Bexley Grammar School could you let me know how you feel about it : ie do they teach the IB well, is there support for the pupils, is the school friendly, or is the school one of these super strict schools that hand out detentions for being late? Any experience shared would be gratefully appreciated.

My DS went to a different local sixth form but we did look at BGS and we liked it but my DS preferred to study A Levels rather than the IB so he declined his place at BGS.

From what I saw on the open evening, BGS is a good school and pupils enjoy their time studying there, staff seemed very approachable and pupils engaged. Those pupils that I know, who have gone through the sixth form, seem to have done well in their exams and achieved high UCAS grades and current pupils seem to be enjoying their time there too. I think it probably comes down to whether or not your DC prefers the IB or A Level route. Most BGS pupils who joined from year 7 stay on which I think shows the positive side of the school that pupils like to remain there but they have been encouraged to study the IB from day one so they are more comfortable with it.

It is a more selective school than say Crown Woods or Blackfen but the grade boundaries to study there aren’t as high as other grammar sixth forms, such as Townley, Beths etc.

Again, this is not from personal experience because my DC studied elsewhere but from what I have heard the school isn’t too pushy and seems to get the right balance of pushing pupils but encouraging them at the same time. The school will expect a high standard from pupils though and for pupils to be self motivated. I think it may take outside students a bit longer to find their feet because they are not familiar with the school but they do settle in.
