GCSE to top private sixth form?

Do anyone knows if my daughter gets about target grade 9 grade 9s but 2 7s and mock grades generally with all 8-9 but two grade 6s will it be very challenging for her to get into a top ranking about 5-15 private school sixth form? Will it be too overestimate herself to get into these competitive excellent schools?

Do the schools you are looking at offer on mocks not actual results?

The schools you are interested in will say on their websites what GCSE grades they expect and what their admission policy is. For such selective schools they will want minimum of mostly 7’s plus at least 7’s in the subjects she’s taking at A level (maths and sciences tend to want grade 8’s). If she gets a raft of 9s, 8s & 7s she’ll be fine. The odd 6 will likely be ok as long as it’s not in a subject she wishes to take at A level.

Most (if not all) will require prospective students to take entrance exams and interviews to get an offer of a place as well as actually get the required GSCE grades on results day.
Entrance exams are usually in Nov/Dec for the following September entry, so I hope you're not thinking of Sept 23 entrance.

Thank you. I am thinking of entry in 2024 but I see some schools in the North starts the admission process in about January and offers are out in late March.

I just wonder will about this kind of similar result in her mocks will be worse than other candidates when applying such top schools and how much chance will she have when applying to the top selective schools?

It will largely depend on how well she does in the school's own entrance exams.
However, if you are looking at 2024 entry, your DD will surely have at least one more set of mock exam results before starting applications - will she not do end of year exams at her current school? That is an opportunity to raise her grades.
What are the entry requirements for the schools you are looking at?

Rosesss · 23/02/2023 23:01

I am currently looking at North London Collegiate School and I think her future mocks probably will have some similar result. Do you think she will be competitiveness enough to go there or will be too overestimate?

do they have a gcse handbook GCSE grade expectations are often included in there or ring admissions. Top ranked schools (top 10 at least) expect majority grade 8-9 an odd 7 is fine as long as you don’t want to do it for A level. Can she drop any of the GCSEs with a 6? Better to have 9 very good grades than 11 with some poor grades. They will work off her current schools predicted grades rather than mocks. Although they are often similar.

Rosesss · 27/02/2023 20:18

@Taptap2 thanks but they do not have a gcse handbook to say what they expect candidates to have in gcse. the 6s are only in mocks but target grade with 7s but does that still work to go into NLCS?

Maybe contact their admissions department. Most school admission departments /people are incredibly helpful.

Marisquita · 27/02/2023 20:33

NLCS does have a sixth form entry handbook on its website which explains the process. They request GCSE predictions but make clear that any offers are typically unconditional because selection is largely based on performance in their entrance exam.

They only have 20 places so it will be highly competitive. If you are asking whether your DD is academic enough, it’s impossible for anyone on here to say as from what you say she’s only in Y10(?). If I have understood you correctly, her school has set targets of 99999999977 and she is currently scoring 8s and 9s with a couple of 6s. So there’s no reason why she shouldn’t do very well in a competitive selection process, especially if the current 6s are in subjects she won’t be continuing with.

Does she want to do A Levels or IB?

Rosesss · 27/02/2023 20:54

Thanks my daughter wants to do A-Level and luckily the subjects she want to do have all target 9s.

@Rosesss does your daughter have other attributes or talents she can bring to the school? Music, Drama, Art, Sport, Deabting, language skills? Often in a competitive place application it might be what else she can bring to the school that makes the difference. Schools are looking for more than just academic results. I do wish you luck.
