Secondary Science - any tips for using Longmans Exploring Science course?

Have got a months long term supply teaching science. The department uses Exploring Science for KS3 - and apparently for KS4 although I can't find any reference to this on the Longman's website.
If you have used/know this course have you any useful hints and tips?
TIA

Is this any use?

I think MartianBishop uses Exploring Science for KS3 - never heard of it in KS4.

Thanks for the link and the replies - without the materials its hard to make much of it really. I suppose I need to talk to the Science department at the school for this, but they have all gone home for half term and I have no contact details. My briefing was a hurried 10 mins at the end of school on Friday (I had been in doing three days general supply, but they only got their act together on the Friday) when I was racing off to collect my son from after-school club on the other side of the city!

Martianbishop Yoohoo! Do you use Exploring Science? What is it like?
The HoD said not to worry about what I was doing until after half term, but I hate going in unprepared!

We use spectrum but have a few exploring books. They are quite well laid out. We use the Longman books for ks4 as well - foundation sc 1 +2 and Higher sc 1+2 though they relate to the old schemes not the new courses.
Can't help you much tho as I'm the a science tech so I refer to the schemes and get out worksheets but obvoiusly don't teach.
Good luck.

Do you know what you are teaching next Monday? Are the lessons already prepped for you? Do you know which classes you will have?

Let us know and I'm sure we could string together a few lessons for you.

I don't know what classes I'm teaching yet - but then neither did they (on Friday). The Head of Science said that they would set work for the first day - and give me lots of support and help.
Rumour (in the Maths Department) is that the Science lesson plans are all done, dusted and in the SoW, so that once I know which groups I have - and where they have got to - there should be minimal preparation.
My brief experience of the school so far would suggest that differentiation may be insufficient....

If they aren't losing any sleep over it then neither should you.

Donk · 11/02/2008 15:40

I know i shouldn't be losing sleep over it - but I HATE not knowing what I'm doing. It makes me anxious.

Many thanks for all your replies - are any of you having a go at the 'Ready to Learn' experiment?
