Hi everyone,

I've been a maths tutor for over 10 years, including four years of teaching maths in school.

If you have any questions about supporting your children with their maths work, send them my way.

I've got one Smile

If you had a DC who was resitting maths (to be fair, didn't really sit it first time round, so first proper attempt), capable on a good day, but who had general low resilience and stamina, would you recommend any different approach to sitting the maths papers other than Q1->.?

Follow up question. If maths lessons had a 30% chance of being disastrous, would you send them into a 2 hr maths lesson starting at 3pm the day before, or just bring them home?

I'm new to this forum, so you'll have to help me a bit:

  • Does DC mean child?
  • What do you mean by "Q1->"

Yup DC means darling child.

Yes my question was for a child who runs out of stamina before they run out of time, is there a different approach to just starting at Question 1 and going forwards?

(In English Language, teachers sometimes recommend doing questions out of order)

TeenDivided · 26/01/2023 14:27

(I accept this is a bit of a niche question.)

shalimkhan · 26/01/2023 16:01

I see, thanks.

Generally, there's not much benefit to doing the questions out of order.

If a student has particular difficulty finishing the paper, I would focus on addressing the root cause of this.

Does she struggle to finish exam papers in other subjects as well, or is the problem just in Maths?

Thanks, I thought there probably was no benefit in out of order.

The lack of stamina is MH related so there isn't a quick fix.

This probably isn't at all helpful but my DD goes through in order at first but moves straight on to next question if she reads one that she doesn't instantly know how to tackle. So the first run through makes sure she's done everything she could do, and there are lots of gaps. Then she works backwards, answering everything she's missed. Seems to work well for her. Says her brain is subconsciously thinking about the ones that needed more thought!

ReamsOfCheese · 26/01/2023 19:13

@TeenDivided I disagree, I think there's benefit to do the questions out of order so your DC can feel confident scooping up the marks they can answer and then go back over the paper to try and tackle the harder questions. There's nothing sadder as an examiner than seeing a paper where the child attempted question 1, got stuck, and left the rest of the paper blank.

ReamsOfCheese · 26/01/2023 19:14

to do
I meant "to doing."
Good job I'm not an English teacher/examiner, really.

@TeenDivided

In my day job I've been able to successfully coach hundreds of kids over the years, even ones with particular difficulties.

It's all about considering her unique situation and creating an optimised plan.

For example, you could come up with a strategy for her to take short breaks during the exam time period, to give her mind a chance to calm down.
