11+ Indie, what's the pass rate?

Hello!

DS10 is currently at a local prep school and we have applied for two local privates.

He sat one exam yesterday and thought the maths was hard, he said he only managed 26 out of 36 of the questions.

The next exam is on Wednesday, and it's a CAT4 test and an English test. His English is amazing and he's working beyond his academic year. Maths is iffy. But the CAT4 maths sequences and the shapes he just struggles with so much.

The verbal reasoning is great.

I'm worried he's going to fail. But what is the pass rate usually? What do the schools look for?

He's had the interviews and references from his teacher already and all is well there.

So, I'm just anxious he's going to feel like a failure if he doesn't pass. X

I did not want to read and run. It is impossible to provide views without knowing which part of the country / schools, etc.
I think that the best is to speak, if not done so, with your current HM - they will have an understanding of your DS's standing within the cohort and what is the usual standard associated with entry to those schools. At the end of the day, that is what peeps are for - to prep your child and guide you in the 11+ process.

Thank you.

His teacher seems positive but when I've done mock tests with him on Atom Learning, they haven't been great if I'm honest...

I think that's why I am worrying! But his teacher said he thinks he'll pass.

The schools are;

King Edward VI in Southampton and Embley in Romsey.

I'm sure he will be fine, the number of dc taking the exams outside London is incomparable to the numbers sitting mentioned on the threads here. Plus your ds is in a prep that can advise etc.
Emberly is owned by United Learning who also own many schools mentioned on MN, these schools have to be full for the business model to work.

QuiteAJourney · 22/01/2023 17:42

I am afraid I am not familiar with those schools - others in Mumsnet might be, may be you can open a thread with the name of those schools in it? That might attract some response ...

This happened with soft and gentle in the early 2000s. It was aways my go to in the 90s as a teen and young adult and then overnight it changed and I was sweaty by mid morning. I hate it when good products suddenly change.

Oh wrong thread sorry!!

Maybe should have exapanded on the last comment.

141 is 99.7% which is give or take 3 in a 1,000 kids.

Do Cat4 actually give that mark to 3 in a 1,000 kids?

Just I seem to see a fair few 141's knocking about on here and they should be rarer than hen's teeth going off what I'd expect.

^^ sorry wrong thread.

There isn’t usually a pass rate. Schools know roughly what percentage of people will accept the offer if it’s given, and how many offers they need to make to be full. They give to the top performers up to that level, factoring in anyone with sporting/musical talent they might wish to accept who didn’t do quite so well.

Some years, the score required to get an offer will be higher than other years. It all depends on the number and quality of the applicants.

In some areas, nearly everyone will get an offer. In others, you might need to beat off 7/8 applicants.

In some areas, children sit for multiple schools. They might get offers from all, or some or none even though they perform similarly in exams. Some are simply more competitive and harder to get into than others and that’s all determined by the pool if applicants.
