We've not had a single letter or meeting yet. Should we by now do you think? Seems late...

Options booklet at my school went out 2 weeks ago, due back week before easter. Parents meeting end of feb. Depends how soon school needs to timetable for September. Also because of new diplomas some schools have to wait for training colleges to confirm courses they can offer to next years, year 10.
I'd wait until after 1/2 term and then phone school.

I have a DS in year 9, and I'm also a Y9 form tutor in a different school.

At each school, we have had various letters and career activities for the pupils.

We haven't either, so you're not alone. It's annoying as the kids are worrying whether or not the will/won't be allowed to do what they want. There's a parents evening in March & I'm assuming info will be given out at or just before that.

roisin · 05/02/2008 22:13

Ours have to have their forms in by the end of this week I think. But that's earlier than we've ever done it, because of the planning around the new diplomas I think.

We still have rubbish options choices, where it's virtually impossible for students to choose more than one 'proper' (academic) subject, but they all have to do at least two or three improper subjects!

Freckle · 05/02/2008 22:15

The pupils have had various sessions at school about it, we've received letters and an options booklet and we've just had parents' evening. DS1's form with his choices goes in tomorrow.

Loshad · 05/02/2008 22:21

we have two sessions in march, the boys have been discussing things at school for quite a while, then i guess we get wheeled in for the final decisions

Hallgerda · 06/02/2008 09:08

There have been sales pitches from the various subjects at school, but all I've received is notification of the relevant parents' evenings.

Remotew · 06/02/2008 09:41

We've got an options evening early March. There was also an evening last week at the local college of FE for options that can be taken via college e.g. hair and beauty, hospitality.

We're going to sort it out at the meeting. DD doesnt want to do a language and I'm hoping a teacher may persuade her otherwise.

unknownrebelbang · 06/02/2008 23:38

We've got a meeting tomorrow night, and we think the form has to be returned after half-term.

DS1 doesn't appear to have a great deal of choice, tbh, but we'll know more tomorrow.

Ours is next week, it looks like dd can't have all her choices and will have to ditch sociology for either dance, art or music.

We've got options evening at the end of Feb. So far they have had several talks but no booklets or info for parents, so its a bit frustrating at the mo. They have some sort of in school options day today but ds is too ill to go (bad cold) . He's thinking about GCSE in electronics, anyone know anything about it? He is quite academic & sciency generally, so this would be his practical subj I suppose. Short course RE is compulsory, was surprised about that (not a church school).

snorkle · 07/02/2008 15:22

RE is often compulsory as they have to teach it by law, so schools tend to think as they have to timetable lessons kids might as well take an exam. Plus the fact it's considered easyish so might boost league table results.

DITDOT · 07/02/2008 15:41

GCSE Electronics is not for the faint hearted! I would recommend that any student taking it is excellent at Maths and Science. Students who take this thinking it will be easy (though this doesn't sound like your son) will do badly as it is quite complex. Also worth asking if there is a minimum class size as some years it has been an unpopular option and the subject not allowed to run in my school!! Therefore a second option would be advisable.
