Stockport private schools for children with ADHD

DD is year 4 in a small state primary where she is doing ok academically (exceeding in most subjects) and socially but she is very anxious and has recently been diagnosed with ADHD (inattententive, not hyperactive). The school are supporting her with her anxiety and ADHD but even so she is very disorganised and she is struggling a bit, finding school overwhelming.

im starting to think ahead to secondary and really worried how she is going to cope. I hadn’t really thought about private, and I know private schools don’t tend to have good SEN provision but I think she would maybe cope a lot better with the smaller class sizes than she would in a large state secondary.

we would look at Stockport Grammar, Cheadle Hulme, possibly Hulme Hall and Kings. Does anyone have experience of any of these schools or opinions for if they would be a good fit for a sporty and academic but very anxious child with ADHD?

the location is Stockport. It’s in the title? Or have I misunderstood?

@Genericusername12345 my bad! I read that as selective! Morning brain. Ignore

I know people at SGS. Good support for ADHD and anxiety. Don't write off the state schools tho. My DD is at one and they've been fab re ADHD. She's excelling. (She used to have anxiety as part of ADHD but went once she was diagnosed and has meds / understanding )

@Genericusername12345 there's loads of ADHD support on here. But they do find it tough going to High. It's not as much to do with class sizes as the number of different classes / subjects / teachers and having to concentrate sat at a desk for longer and carrying all essential equipment etc

Typically they'll have 30 lessons and up to 20 teachers. All teachers teach multiple classes. They move between classrooms etc and have to remember homework

Thanks @snowtrees we definitely haven’t ruled the state schools out. It’s so hard to know what to do for best. Good to hear your DD is doing so well. I am hoping the anxiety will reduce now she’s got her diagnosis.

The anxiety is often very much linked.
Meds made a massive difference for us. Has climbed sets too. Can focus now so coping & fitting in is much easier.

snowtrees · 16/01/2023 13:38

@Genericusername12345 I do know a lad with hyperactive ADHD at CheadleHulme. I hear he's forever in trouble even on meds. But that's a different scenario

Genericusername12345 · 16/01/2023 20:15

@snowtrees do you know if they feel like CHS are knowledgeable /supportive of ADHD? Maybe not if he’s having a lot of problems?

Sorry I don't. I just know he's in trouble a lot & lots of detentions so something is going wrong
