STAHS St Albans High school

Hello. I would be grateful for any info about this school. I have a daughter in year 7. She is an academic scholar at a less academic co-ed private school in Hertfordshire.

She is doing fine at the school other than the fact she is finding it a bit disruptive in class (handful of boys). And she said that the girls are nice but just not that into learning and school. So she can’t connect with anyone that well. She really does love learning! However, the reason we chose her current school is that she is a high achiever and sometimes puts a lot of pressure on herself. So we didn’t want a high pressure environment. In case it made her unhappy or anxious. Now I’m wondering if she needs to surrounded by girls more like her who are bright annf capable and more academic rather than only being interested in Tik Tok and reality tv 😆. Obviously she loves fun but age appropriate and thrives doing things like drama and art too. Any feedback on the pressure levels at the school and what the girls are like to each other at the school would be greatly appreciated. Thank you 😊

My daughter is in Y8 and she really likes the School. I am happy with her academic progress and her peers seem to really take pride in doing well. I would recommend this School to any girls who are keen to study.

Hi! I am currently in year 13 at STAHS so happy to answer any questions that you have! Can definitely relate to your daughter as I have loved academics since primary school, and I really do think that STAHS has been the best place for me… obviously not the case for everybody as what is right for one student is not right for everyone else, but I have found the academic environment at the High school to be both motivating and supportive. Yes it has been stressful at times but I think exam periods will be quite high pressure whatever school you are at, especially if as you say, your daughter is already very high achieving. For me personally I have not found that the pressure has caused any unhappiness or anxiety for me, in fact I would say the opposite - the majority of my teachers have been super supportive of me and given me so much help with everything from school work and uni applications to more personal pastoral problems. Also in regards to extracurricular activities I would say that STAHS is great at achieving the balance between working hard academically alongside having time to relax, have fun and enjoy sport/music/drama - and there is so much on offer that I think there is something for everyone! Anyway hope this helps a bit and feel free to ask me any questions!

Hi all, looking for any tips for preparing for the STAHS exam- what scores were your daughters getting for mock ISEBs? Also, what was the creative component for the exam please? Thanks

@boygirl118

hi there - appreciate it’s been a while since someone posted on this thread but did you make a choice to move your daughter to STAHs in the end? Your description of your daughter is exactly like mine and we are weighing up an academic scholarship at a less academic school (for the same reasons you highlighted) vs a place at a more selective school or grammar. Any insight from your experience would be really helpful,

@FloraDT I saw one of my DCs primary school parents whose DD was transferring to an older year in stahs. She had taken an academic scholarship at a less academic school but they didn't think she was being challenged enough etc so the move to a more academic school.

That said, I'd find out what opportunities the less academic school have for their scholars and see how it compares to opportunities for those not on academic scholarship in the more academic school. Hope that makes sense.
