May I ask; bursary and your income?

The schools that we have applied for are around £18k annually.

Our income is £55k. We have no assets, we rent, car is on finance, no savings etc.

We have filled in bursary forms and it looks like we only have around £6k that we could put forward for a private senior school.

My DD is currently at a local private but we have a 40% bursary on £8500 annual fees.

Wondering if we had a chance with a decent bursary or am I just pushing our luck here?

I can’t even begin to imagine why you’d prioritise paying even subsidised school fees over having savings for the future. I can’t understand fixation on private schools, much rather prioritise housing and be able to help my DC in the future.

My son was profusely bullied at our local state school. That is why.

But you could have just moved him to another state school?

(I was bullied in private school).

adhdmumoncoffee · 16/01/2023 14:59

@Wellwell82 we have declared that. We've been very transparent.

adhdmumoncoffee · 16/01/2023 15:00

@redskydelight yes we did that. Also, we are okay financially. We don't struggle. If what we are paying now doesn't change much we will be fine.

adhdmumoncoffee · 16/01/2023 15:01

@Wellwell82 no savings. Odd set up. I was a single parent until I met my now partner 2.5 years ago. My child doesn't have contact with bio father.

@Wellwell82 yes absolutely. We haven't tried to dodge anything on the forms at all. As I said, been very truthful etc. have put grandparents would be willing to pay £6k ish but it will be coming out of inheritance 😅

My friends with a bursary at St Paul's have a large amount of equity in their house. They couldn't release the equity as they wouldn't be able to afford the increase in mortgage payments. They also have some savings, though under 50k .

It's no biggy, I change it often!

No we don't have savings. We could start to in the future. My partners business is only starting to do well. So fingers crossed. We also know we need to resubmit bursary forms yearly. So we know things could change. I'm just going for it. See what happens. Won't know if I don't try!

Indeed. But she was offering it up as an answer to why she had to choose private school. Being bullied on one state school does not mean you have to move to a private school.

I don't expect anyone to go into details about things they don't want to talk about.
I was merely pointing out that, in general, being bullied in one school does not mean you are obliged to go to private school (and that bullies also exist in private school).
