Are children who are sitting
for Indi school exams in dec 2022 n Jan 2023 able to finish comprehension in 30 min ?

my son is not able to finish even half of the paper. We have tried Sevenoaks, Westminster 13+ , St Paul’s , James Allen etc n the comp is tough n it takes time to understand n frond answers n then write.

what trick am i missing ? Any pointers please

I think it's just practice unfortunately. My DS has definitely got quicker over time.

We have the opposite problem - DD will confidently finish the whole thing half the allocated time, but makes careless mistakes. I'm not sure this is better!

crazymama123 · 03/01/2023 17:25

We have the same problem. DS is so speedy that he makes silly mistakes and doesn’t read the questions properly.

What is silly mistake in comprehension?

are you talking about maths or comprehension answers?

No

My child didn't sit for any independent exams, but the comprehension sections for the CEM papers for 11+ entry to state grammars were very tight in terms of timings.

The children that do well in these sections are often those that are passionate readers that are used to whizzing through a lot of text with great understanding.

For CEM, the questions tended to follow the text, so the early questions will relate to the early paragraphs etc. If this also tends to be the case, it is useful to have the child practise looking for answers in corresponding sections.

It is often recommended to read quickly through the passage before looking at the questions, but some children that struggle with timings find it easier to read through the questions first, so they can spot some of the relevant things in the passage the first time they read it.

Long written answers and mcq need different approach n skills

they are not comparable.

my child has cleared all top grammar schools n scores always full in literacy section. Yet when it comes to writing comp answers in 30 min he struggles
