King's Maths School

Did anyone else's DC sit the entrance exam for King's Maths School this year (entry 2023)? My DD did and was really surprised at how tough the paper was. She's actually really strong in maths and STEM subjects (predicted 9s) but she struggled with most of the questions. She said it was more similar to 11+ reasoning questions!

Interested to hear from those with DC there or who sat the exam this year. Thank you!

Many kids are strong at maths and KCMS is massively oversubscribed. I hope your daughter isn't too disheartened. You need to be aware that the test results are moderated for a range of contextual factors aimed at 'widening participation', so her performance in the exam is definitely not the only thing that will influence whether she gets to the next stage or not See here: www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/kings_maths_school_admissions_po

e.g. She will get extra points added for being a girl.

Sorry, I don't have an answer, but posting to bump up as I am curious too.

You will likely have better luck in studentroom with dedicated King's Maths admission forums.

Looking at past posts there, the paper is indeed very hard and even among students who qualify, most don't answer all questions and find the test quite difficult.

Below is a fairly typical post from a King's Maths student

"Try not to worry about it. When I did it last year I thought I completely failed it as I didn’t finish it and messed up some questions. I thought I would have no chance of getting in. But now I go to KCLMS. It’s really hard to judge how well you will do as you are not only marked on correct answers but also your working/ the way you think. Good luck to you all. Also as Toastiekid said make sure you don’t discuss answers as some people haven’t sat the exam yet."
