11+ Exams - Are we being realistic? / Waiting List offers

This is my second time going through the 11+ process. Eldest DS was a breeze - academic and enthusiastic about revising for exams.

My 10 year old DS who is now sitting exams is mildly dyslexic and scoring 100-120 on CAT tests, depending on the day.

He has problems with spelling and his handwriting is slow and untidy. His Maths is great but he rushes and makes mistakes. On ISEB papers he generally scores in the 80's % On Atom he's scoring on average 115.

I am worried he will end up without any offers at all. We just learned he did not make the second round for Kingston Grammar. Our other schools are:

Hampton, Reeds, Emanuel, Ibstock and Radnor House. Realise he's unlikely profile for Ibstock but didn't want to leave it out as we live very close by.

Has anyone had WL offers from the above schools and did your DC have a similar profile.

@LoveMyADHD thanks for that! Monday would be good. I thought it would be anytime that week.

LoveMyADHD · 06/01/2023 22:48

Good luck! xxx

Daydreamscometrue · 07/01/2023 06:38

@LoveMyADHD Thanks, same to you!

sugarcookie5 · 07/01/2023 20:05

hope you are all ok during this time! More news next week!!

LoveMyADHD · 07/01/2023 20:20

@sugarcookie5 not looking forward ! Can’t wait for this nightmare to end! 😫

Daydreamscometrue · 07/01/2023 20:32

@LoveMyADHD it's so nerve wracking that I find myself wishing the weekend away in order to get to the week where there will be news.

LoveMyADHD · 07/01/2023 20:34

@Daydreamscometrue It’s awful isn’t it?

ds2 is in Hampton prep and all I’m thinking about last month is NO WAY I’m going through this hell again if he doesn’t get his place to senior!!!! Thinking of options to avoid this hell 😳

Daydreamscometrue · 07/01/2023 20:56

@LoveMyADHD it's been dreadful! Sleepless nights and even my older dd has said it's all I ever talk about.

sugarcookie5 · 07/01/2023 21:27

Wishing everyone luck!!! What are you all waiting for news on??

Daydreamscometrue · 07/01/2023 21:32

@sugarcookie5 thanks and you! We're waiting on Emanuel, Dulwich and Whitgift now.

Daydreamscometrue · 07/01/2023 21:35

How about you @sugarcookie5 ?

sugarcookie5 · 07/01/2023 22:45

Emanuel news next week think all the last news/offers come by half term Friday 10th feb is that right? DS got through to 2nd round Ibstock which was great!

Daydreamscometrue · 08/01/2023 06:38

@sugarcookie5 yes by half term. Same for my DS re Ibstock. Guess we won't hear from them now until February.

Please could anyone advise on Emanual. Do children tend to use public transport in from across the river (near Richmond/Twickenham) or is there a coach route? In terms of academics, is it en par with Hampton or lower? (entrance expectation I mean).

Don't think there are any coaches. Most will come by train to Clapham Junction or by buses.
Entrance is historically easier than Hampton but isn't straightforward as their offers can be a bit random sometimes and DCs getting offers from Hampton, KCS etc don't get offers from Emanuel.

Didsomeonesay · 21/02/2023 23:20

@Greenstheword I’d love to know how your son got on. Fingers crossed it was positive for you.

Mommalicous · 01/03/2023 09:14

Hi, I just saw your post, my son is also in the exact same boat as yours. He ll be sitting his exams next year. Did your son sit for Hampton? Which school did you go with at the end?

lolo99 · 05/03/2023 08:01

What Atom scores will children need to be in the running for the likes of Hampton / LU and. kGS?

hockeygrass · 05/03/2023 09:01

@lolo99 , you said on another thread that your ds has a Hampton 10plus offer already so this should give you an indication of the atom score needed for these schools as it would be in line with his own score.

lolo99 · 05/03/2023 09:13

We didn’t do Atom for 10 plus and we are a state school so nothing done there. We are new to Atom. Sorry if it confused you- it’s a genuine question that I wouldn’t ask if I knew.

lolo99 · 05/03/2023 09:14

And I don’t know his pass mark for 10 plus as when offered they do not tell you the score.

veryverybored · 05/03/2023 09:23

We were state school and never knew CAT scores but if your DS got a 10plus place at Hampton he should be OK for LU and KGS as long as he keeps us a bit of practice during the rest of y5 and into the 11plus exams. (DS got 10plus at Hampton and is now at LU).

veryverybored · 05/03/2023 09:23

And never did Atom etc either

Thank you - we are having to keep the pace up but not sure what I should be aiming for/ it’s a minefield all of this and a stressful one at that

hockeygrass · 05/03/2023 11:11

@lolo99 , why don't you focus on Tiffin and Slough grammars for the near future? You know your ds is capable of getting a full fees offer from the top schools as he already has the Hampton offer. There is no point chasing scholarship offers because the process isn't transparent and they can be worth 10-20%. If you continue with the private system at KGS and LU then go down the bursary route. I'm sure your ds is very capable and will do well wherever he ends up, it's important to recognise how well he has already done.
