Hello, my year 11 daughter is struggling a little and I think she would benefit from a tutor, particularly for Maths GCSE, but possibly English lit too. There are so many online tutor companies online but I would rather go with a recommendation. Can anyone help? Many thanks

Personally, I'd ask for local recommendations- try to find someone who can come to you in person. Ideally, I'd want someone who had taught the exam spec your DD is doing in a school and has a track record with tutoring.

I've rarely seen a student get any benefit from online tutoring unfortunately!

EducatingArti · 18/11/2022 18:36

Yes, I am a tutor ( no vacancies sorry) but I'd go for someone local. You are unlikely to find anyone who would do both maths and English so would need 2 different ones
You should act soon as it is getting to the point where it is too latte for tutoring to make enough of a difference where there are serious issues with understanding. ( Obviously depends a bit on how motivated the student is to work between sessions). I would rarely take on a year 11 after Christmas because experience tells me there's not enough time to make a grade's worth of difference.

We used "My Tutor" to boost ds1's French and the tutor they provided was very, very good. He did 1 hr per week on zoom on top of which he'd set ds half an hours preparatory work each week., so it required aevel of commitment. They were not cheap though.

We had a last minute online tutor for English Lit (well, from December onwards). Ideally we should have started in Year 10 but it did help push Ds over the line I think to the next grade up. This particular tutor was a teacher with lots of GCSE experience and also he was an examiner for the board Ds was sitting so knew what the examiners were looking for. We used Tutorful, but I've also heard good things about Tayberry. The cost was £30 an hour.

Thank you I will try them

We've used Tayberry (they get recommended on here quite a bit so you might have heard of them) who do both maths and english. They do GCSE and get amazing results. My kids are much younger and still in primary, but their tutors are really good

Hiya.
I can help. This organisation is running a GCSE information webinar next week and offer mock tests and revision courses so students can pinpoint exactly the areas they need to focus on over the Christmas break.
I can also recommend an excellent GCSE tutor who’s also an examiner. Send me a message x
Here’s the details for the mocks/revision courses:

Hiya, I'd definitely recommend: www.facebook.com/KipMcGrathEly/ if you're still looking about. I've found them to be absolutely fantastic people, very kind and helpful. I think the initial assessment is free.

I know Anika and she's truly amazing

I’m a maths tutor and almost all of my tutees are referred by my ex colleagues still working in the department. You could try emailing the HoD or speaking to them at a parents’ evening and asking if they can recommend someone.

RandomUsername22 · 27/11/2022 10:03

If you are still looking I can recommend an excellent English tutor - really friendly guy named Luke who got my lad from a 7 to a 9 through sheer grit, and actually got him to enjoy it! Am using him again for my daughter this year. He’s also a Drama/Shakespeare specialist which is helpful, and great at exam technique and prep. I think he does an initial chat for free too - he’s at www.facebook.com/astartutorsyork

AntoinetteCosway · 27/11/2022 10:26

I'm an English tutor (fully booked) and almost all of my tutees come through recommendations now, as I've been doing it for nearly 20 years. I think getting a recommendation from someone you know (and who knows your child) is probably the best way to go about it. There are some good sites like First Tutors that let you look at lots of people's profiles, and those have ratings too, but a personal suggestion from someone you trust is likely to be helpful.

Hey there,
I have used this site before and found it super helpful. It isn't designed to replace teaching but is great for explaining concepts and analyzing quotes.
