Sixth form admission

Hello
My daughter apply to Wimbledon High School or North London Collegiate School for sixth form. For her year 10 end of year exam, she got 5 grade 9, 4 grade 8, 1 grade 5 and for Eng lang she only gets 6. For her predicted grade she gets 9 grade 9s and 2 grade 7s. For her A level subjects she wants to study she gets all 8 with predicted grade of 9s. Is her result competitive to get into these good school or is it quite hard to get into as the result is not particularly exceptional? She is very a very diligent student and eager to improve.

Do the schools not have standard admission grades for 6th form on their websites?

Rosesss · 07/11/2022 19:28

Her result pass the standard admission grades for these sixth forms but I am not sure if she can secure a place just by passing the standard

OP if you don’t get people with specific knowledge Of these schools it might help to start a new thread with the school names in the title. It will be a small number of MNers who have this knowledge!

The schools are very far apart, will you move depending on where she goes?

Have you been to the Open Days? Or look out for them and talk to staff.

Good luck, your Dd is doing very well.

Those would be good enough GCSEs, but does the school also have other assessments? What would your DD bring to the life of the school?

I note that these schools are miles away from each other, and I can't quite picture where you live for both to have a reasonable school run.

It sounds like you've decided you do not want your DD to stay put, but it might be worth applying for some other schools as fallback - maybe Graveney (state school, many leave the private sector for its sixth form, all on grades, plus distance (I think) if excess applicants with the grades), or other GDST such as PHS and SCHS

Do the schools not have standard admission grades for 6th form on their websites?

NLCS don't, they focus on the exams candidates have to take in each subject they want to study; they have about 20 places for external candidates. Realistically it's going to be on a par at least with what Wimbledon want, and they do lay it out -

"Our expected entry standard is high and we require entrants to achieve Grades 8 or 9 (A/A) at GCSE (or equivalent) for the subjects to be studied at A Level; entrants are expected to have a minimum of eight GCSEs (or equivalent overseas qualifications) at Grade 6-9 (A, A or B grades) (maximum two Grade 6's) and offers will be made conditional on achieving these"

Thanks for all the advice. My family is planning to relocate between Wimbledon or near NLCS so I will not worry on the location much.

Do these schools focus more in the exam grade( the most recent of my DD has is only end of Y10 exam) or the predicted grade? I saw Wimbledon will have verbal reasoning and thinking skills assessment and I believe she will be fine in it. But I am not too confident that she will probably secure a place and just don't want her to feel disappointed.

It won't all be on grades. They will want to know what your daughter will bring to their schools as well. And I suspect it will depend a bit on what A levels she wants to study. WHS will lose some mathematicians/ scientists to schools Kings Wimbledon etc so they may want new pupils into 6th form who are strong in these subject and want to study them at A level. They will also want them to participate in all the Co-curricular stuff.
Both schools are similar academic wise. If she definitely wants to move from her current school you may want a couple more options just in case but if she's happy to stay where she is but may fancy a move then you could just see what happens.

hockeygrass · 07/11/2022 21:02

Yes I agree, it won't be just her grades, it will be what she can bring to the school in terms of her skills and personality too. For example WHS will offer to top sports candidates - eg national level rowers and musicians that play an instrument to a diploma level that they are lacking in school orchestra eg cello etc. You will be amazed at the skill set of dc in London seeking 6th form places at private schools esp on the scholarship route. On the plus side as the other poster has mentioned top level high flying dd leave girls schools to go to mixed 6th forms esp Kings Wimbledon and Westminster so there is always movement but good idea to have a back up plan for your dd.

My daughter went through the process a couple years ago. As part of the application she had to submit her predicted grades (the school fills in a form) and on the back of that would get an interview (some interview all applicants, some only if they meet their GCSE baseline).
Then she had to either submit further work depending on her A level choices (an essay, a biology experiment write up, portfolio for example) or attend an exam day. Then she had interviews; one general more relaxed one and one more intense subject specific. Then she would either be made a conditional offer or be rejected, and was given two weeks to make a decision and pay a deposit. On GCSE results day she had to inform the school of her results (I think one said she'd have to go in person), and the place confirmed. A friend missed her offer by just one grade and was rejected (Ibstock I believe) and had to scramble to find a school, but she did and is happy.
The schools don't have many places for outside candidates as so many girls do stay on - that certainly was the case at my daughter's school where they ALL stayed on, and there were only 13 new girls in a year group of 70.

Thanks for all the sharing! Do anyone know how competitive is Wimbledon High School and North London Collegiate School like how many will apply and how many people will they offer a place to?

You need to ask the Admissions teams
but you also need to consider more schools on your list.
