Hello,
Does anyone know what this involves?
We have had no communication from the school and my daughter mentioned she had to pick a topic and present in class.
I didn't realise this happens quite early on.
She also told me it usually doesn't count towards the actual grade.
Is this correct?

Thanks very much
Xx

Basically what your daughter said! You have to pick a topic and then give a short presentation . At DC's school there was a shortlist or you could pick your own topic if it was considered sufficiently rigorous. So DS was allowed to talk about the state of American politics, but talking about your pet wouldn't be allowed.

Some schools like to do it early to "get it out of the way" (DC's school did it towards the end of Year 10).

It doesn't count towards the 9-1 GCSE grade but it is recorded separately as Distinction/Merit/Pass/Fail.

It doesn't count, but it's a good exercise. DD2 did hers on marine conservation and the importance of sharks in maintaining biodiversity.

As above . I am head of a large English dept and all of the exam boards do it. our year elevens are doing it now.

sounds scary but it used to be weighted at ( worth) 20% of their total grade for English Language.

now a distinct and totally separate grading system.

Needs doing, filming and assessing so that we can move into the stuff that gets then the grade!

DD1 did this last year in yr11 - early on, so around this time. Her class was given the big list of topics on the Thursday and had to present in the double lessons on the Monday or Tuesday (alphabetical - she was one of the first on the Monday) so it was quite a short time to research, write and practise it. She got a Merit which was recorded as M alongside her numerical grade. Sounds like some schools allow them to choose their own topic though - the sharks one mentioned above sounds interesting!

Thank you for the responses! Yes, she could choose her own topic too and we basically left her to it as we felt it is better she owned it (though the urge to step in was absolutely there)
I did offer to be passive audience several times so she could practise but she simply refused.
It was over this week and I cannot tell if it went well as she seems to be in a foul mood and I am staying away as much as I can other than offering food and drinks!

@Land0r that was my DD - she's now studing Marine Bio, surprise, surprise. She got a distinction, but did put a lot of work into it.

pointythings Wow, that's fantastic. Hope she is enjoying her course.
