Greycoat language place results

Hi all, this is my first time posting on Mumsnet but have been following for a while... Daughter applied for a language place at Greycoats and we received a letter this week saying "We are happy to let you know that based on the result of her test you're likely to be offered one of our 15 language places". I'm confused whether this is a definite offer for a language place - the wording 'likely to be offered' (rather than 'will be offered') has thrown me. I wasn't sure whether if you were on the wait list for a language place they would say that specifically instead. Maybe I'm reading too much into the wording but we weren't expecting this so the whole thing has surprised us and there isn't much further info on the website or in the letter. If anyone who has experience of this can confirm, I'd be grateful. Thank you!

I am assuming it means she scored in the top 15 results so if you put it first on your CAF then you will be offered a place. Obviously if you don't list it first, you will only be considered for a place if you don't secure a place at your top ranked school.

Thank you for replying. That's what we thought but it was the wording 'likely to be offered' that threw us... it reads like there could still be a possibility she won't be. But I could reading it too literally!

Maybe you’re dd is top 20 or something and they know that normally those ranks would also get a place as some will go private/ grammar etc. Do you want your dd to go there - if so put it first on your Caf I guess.

I think that means you arent in top 15, but based on previous years you are likely to get a place.

Has everyone received their letters? Did it also come via email?

South80s · 28/10/2022 15:42

@Pigsears I don't know about others as we don't know anyone else applying but we only received a letter in the post - no email - and we received the letter a couple of days ago.

State school admissions are governed by the Admissions Code.

Registering to sit any admissions test for a state school is not 'applying for a place' - the school's published admissions arrangements should make this clear. Similarly, as an application for a place hasn't been made at this point, the school cannot make an offer of a place, but should give you enough information regarding your DC's performance for you to make an informed decision re actually applying.

'Applying for a place' is via naming the school on your local authority's CAF snd the single offer of a school place must be made by your LA (not the school) on national offer day.

Many years since this system was introduced, some schools do still seem not to be able to get to grips with the legalities, but the information that GCH has given you does comply with the Code in both directions, do speak.

Hello @South80s congrats to your daughter on her performance on the exam. We live quite outside the usual catchment area I believe although we do attend a CofE regularly so my daughter will be sitting the exam. Does your daughter recall the format of the exam (was there a listening element? phonics element? Or just a translation from an alien language to english?) Any hints and tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
