Verbal job offer but told not to resign!

Offered job same day as interview and I was asked to chase up referees. This was done and they received them. The next day I received an email saying not to hand in my notice as there is something they need to follow up on from references and will get back to me next week!!

im so worried, this was a dream teaching job. I have been off work 11 weeks on and off in the past year due to various health problems and struggle with stress at my current job and needed this to get away. Can they retract the offer, is there anything I can do or say when the head calls to discuss next week?

In a nutshell, yes they can retract the offer.

Really it depends on what they are querying but if they call you to discuss, be honest.

Whatever you do, don't ever hand in your notice because you're had a verbal job offer - always wait for written proof!

Yes, they can retract the job offer- particularly if it's something that relates to safer recruitment. The offer will have been made conditional on references, unfortunately.

Assuming you're currently in a teaching job, you've got until the 31st to hand in your notice. The new school will be aware of the time scales involved and will get back to you.

Is it possible that the issue relates to sickness in your current role? If so, I would just be honest, and explain how you expect things to be very different in a new environment.

I do have lots of sympathy, and I hope it works out.

Thank you all
It was 3 episodes Covid and serious gall stone attacks needing surgery. Prior to that, 10years virtually no absences. Just a very bad year health wise. Do you think explaining things would help? Maybe send an email over the weekend or just wait for the inevitable on Monday.

Are you on good terms with the people who wrote your references? If it was me, I’d be tempted to ask them what might have been in there to cause concern.
If it is just the absence, I’d probably email the new school to say you are aware that may be the cause for caution and you’d be happy to discuss it with them in more detail.

I'd hope the school would discuss their concerns with you on Monday, rather than just dismissing you- but I don't think an email would hurt?

I agree it might be worth asking to view your references too?

Thank you, Can you request a copy of the reference directly from the referee or do you need to go via hr?

They haven't told you that is the issue.

I get that you're worried, but you need to wait and listen.

Firing off an email like that when you don't even know if that's the concern is unwise.

I'd ask the referees if there's anything in there that might be an issue. If they say no, I'd probably do a formal request to see references via HR or your union rep.

How did it go?

Helpmegetajob · 25/10/2022 23:57

Hi, got an email to say they are not able to follow up on references until Monday as they’ve tried to reach them
but there’s no response. Not sure what else I can do other than wait. it’s put a real dampener on the whole thing now.
😫
