Staff Room!!!

ScienceTeacher · 27/01/2008 14:42

It was suggested on another thread that we should have a staff room, so I thought I'd bite the bullet and start one.

Shall we introduce ourselves?

I teach Science (Physics A-level and GCSE Chemistry plus the usual general science in KS3, and also KS3 Geography). I work in a small girls' independent school. I started this job in September having spent two years in contract and supply. This was a getting back to teaching after an 8-year maternity leave.

I am a mum to five children from 16 (gcse!) TO 5.

I'm still off sick BUT am going to work tomorrow pm as some of my KS4/6th form are getting presented with their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award I am so proud of them

trulymadlydeeply · 27/01/2008 20:50

Yoo hoo fizzbuzz; here I am (waves from the coffeee machine and retires to a corner trying not to look to panic struck).

I taught drama for 11 years - LOVED it! - and then moved to France where I still am.

Just popped back to do some supply over the winter and keep my hand in.

Blimey WHAT a shock!!! But pleased to know I can still cut it in the classroom...

fizzbuzz · 27/01/2008 20:55

Thought you might be coming back to work

How do you do supply over the winter? Do you miss us then? Envy your energy and enthusiasm, but then you know me.......

fizzbuzz · 27/01/2008 20:56

Where did you do it? You did threaten it in your leaving speech if I remember rightly

Some of the MFL teachersin our school are going to the local primary schools for set lessons. Very good idea!!
I teach English and history and am also an AEN coordinator, Ass HOY.
School is big, an inner ciry comp, so the majority of kids are lacking direction role models and motivation. It's hard work and can overwhelm you, listening to what these kids contend with before they come to school. It breaks my heart.

fatzak · 28/01/2008 12:21

I used to teach MFL in a huge secondary school and desperately wanted to move into primary. I wrote to all the schools in my LEA and not one got back in touch I have been very fortunate though to land a job in on of the few remaining middle schools (for how long I don't know) which is Years 6 - 8.

It works for us as a family me being here (no exam classes, near to home), but I have to say it prob isn't the best career move. Just one year on I can feel myself becoming out of the secondary world eg have no idea about all the 14-19 changes and really must keep my languages skills going as I have jumped from teaching up to A level to now just Year!!!

I do enjoy my job much more now though I have to say!!

fatzak · 28/01/2008 12:21

Year 8 that will be!

shoshe · 28/01/2008 13:47

And stares wide eyed at the Big Girls in the Big Girls Staff Room.

OK, so may have a bit of baby podge left, but am not a BIG GIRL

Are you lot primary then????

fizzbuzz · 28/01/2008 18:45

We have to be big and tough to take on some of our little charmers

Nymphadora · 28/01/2008 19:06

I think they are the childminders?

LOL at big and tough, my sixth formers are all 6ft and the staff have an average of 5ft2!

Went to my presentation today and it was great , everyone is really proud of my group & the local paper will hopefully have a big article about it as it seems that we are one of the first SN schools (in England!)to do Duke of Ed

slayerette · 28/01/2008 19:10

Hello - is it to late to introduce myself? I teach English p/t in a mixed independent secondary school. Am on one year contract so just starting to get anxious about whether there'll be work for me in September - keep your fingers crossed, everyone!

slayerette · 28/01/2008 19:11

Tomorrow I have double Yr 10 last two periods btw...

janeite · 28/01/2008 19:27

Hi Slayerette - fingers crossed here for you.

I have had a full teaching day plus a meeting which I had to chair, after school, and have been bunged up with a cold so feeling sorry for myself. AND the electricity went in my classroom for two hours - so I had to teach with no lights, no computer, no heating.

Sitting here now trying to muster up the enthusiasm to do some planning and/or coursework marking but really just want to go to bed with a hot toddy!!

Whizzz · 28/01/2008 19:33

My scariest part of the day was supporting a pupil with ADHD in DT when he needed to use a Stanley knife and was ricocheting
alarmingly round the room with it...

Asgoodas · 28/01/2008 19:43

I have 'parents Day' - no teaching, just truth telling
I made a very bad error today. Instead of telling my Year 10 that Wordsworth was born in the Lake District...I told them the name of the town. It was double entendre lesson with much sniggering and play on words. I wish he'd been born in Settle - not Cockermouth.

Asgoodas · 28/01/2008 19:44

excellent Whizzz - can picture it now

Blandmum · 28/01/2008 19:47

I had to teach y10 about sex hormones, so had to say the words penis, testicles, breasts and periods.

the were all amazingly sensible about it TBH!

Whizzz · 28/01/2008 19:48

The teacher just stood there.....looking very out of his depth & rather afraid

Asgoodas · 28/01/2008 20:08

That's how I looked whizzz - out of my depth and rather afraid!! This class are brilliant - many fear them due to the fact that they are a handful. They believed Juliet deserved a "good slappin'" whenwe studied the text. Gotta love 'em.
Wouldn't attempt the hormone chat MB. I dare you...

fizzbuzz · 28/01/2008 20:08

Whizz. I have to cope with kids in DT with ADHD, and NO support. Have never had any support in DT, and they use knives, spray glue, scissors, all sorts of stuff..

alfiesbabe · 28/01/2008 21:37

Whizz, as SENCO I'm redirecting you to support fizzbuzz in DT, ok??!!
