SEN support in secondary schools

Hello,

My child (currently in year6) is due to start secondary school in 2023. We are in the process of visiting schools to see what support they can provide. But we are not getting all the information at the moment. Our preference would be a small mainstream with good support in place (if required 1:1 needs to provided). We are in Berkshire. My child is autistic and has an EHCP.
I would really appreciate if anyone had similar situation and can recommend the schools your child is in.
Thank you

There are special schools that cater for autistic pupil’s who are academically able. They aren’t as common but they do exist. Have a look at Swalcliffe Park School, Breckenbrough, Alderwasley Hall School, Gretton, West Kirby School, Lokrum Fields. A couple of NAS’s and Aspris’s schools do too.

Depending on specific needs some SS who primary need isn’t ASD may be suitable such as More House. Lots of their boys are ND.

If you post on the SN boards you might get more suggestions.

You will not get 1.1 support without it being written in section F. It also needs to say how many hours will be needed.
I fear that you need a better and tighter ehcp. Look at what you think will work. If you want the asd unit you need to get a professional report that spells this need out.

In all honesty, even if 1:1 is specified in the ECHP, it may not materialise properly in some schools. But definitely get it written in, because it certainly won't happen without.

Most secondary schools don't have any TAs in classes for children who don't have it specified in their ECHP.

If 1:1 is specified and quantified in section F of the EHCP it must be provided. If it isn’t the parents can enforce the EHCP.
