Underachieving end of year exams-what next?

I am curious as to how schools deal with children who do poorly on the end of year exams.
I appreciate all schools will have their own procedures, but I'm thinking more so of selective schools. I can imagine a child at a grammar school doing poorly at the end of year exams won't be told it's ok, try harder next year (or maybe they do?)

Would be good to hear from parents with children in selective schools and their experience.

Interesting question as ALL schools should be giving the kids feedback on a regular basis. Not just selectives and not just when ‘underachieving’. It also depends what you mean by underachieving. Some people (and I’m not suggesting you OP) think anything less than an A is underachievement. For that kid a D may be blooming good. So it depends on the potential. Maybe it’s knowledge, lack of understanding, poor revision, essay technique etc. Again, a good teacher will be able to say what’s going wrong, where & how they can improve.

Thank you, I do believe teachers need to give feedback.
I'm curious as to how schools (such as grammars) deal with what they would class as 'not good enough'. I understand most schools have end of year assessments, and I would hope majority will ensure pupils receive the guidance/feedback required.

(Side note- curious to see how those schools 'work' as that would make a difference to choices).
