Sutton, Wilson and Wallington Grammar School

Hi. I’m bit confused for Grammar school result and offer. Wilson school in Croydon says, “You will therefore have information about whether your son is eligible to be considered for a place at the school(s) before the final CAF deadline of 31 October 2022.” And then Wallington School FAQ says that offer will be given on 1st March 2023. So when the schools will inform us whether our DS are eligible or not in October 2022 -doesn’t it mean that we will be able to understand whether they will get places or not. Can anyone please suggest what exact info schools will give us in October 2022??

The schools set a pass mark and tell you by end Oct if your child scored above the pass mark. However more boys pass than there are spaces for, so they apply their oversubscription criteria. So it is possible to pass but not be offered a place in March, as all the places were filled by students who better met the admissions criteria. If your child passes, they won't tell you their score, presumably to stop people comparing scores en masse to see who is likely to get in.

Also all three have different pass marks and/or allocate a different weight to English/ maths and or stage 1/2 papers so you can pass one and not the others. Some have ring fenced spaces for local children or fsm children etc.

regardless of what result you get you should apply for at least one non grammar school you have a very good chance of getting into to cover your bases as I think people are caught out every year.

Their pass mark will determine eligibility. So your dc may have "passed" but there be too many scoring above him for him to be considered for a place. Places are only confirmed in March.

Really wise advice on here. I will add that if your DS is eligible for ALL of the grammars you apply for, ie scores above the cut off, then the chances are very high that he will get at least one (ie wallington , which is the easiest of them all).

[wilson is the hardest, all children passing to Wilson stand an exceedingly good chance of getting something.]

However, I agree with pp: DO put a local non grammar on there too (I didn’t and I only realised how stupid this was after I’d submitted my form. DS got a great ss grammar in the end. Not one on your list. But I could have saved myself some worry as we waited for March when the school choice is given to you.)

Thank you so much all for your advice. I am now waiting to get the eligibility results first. I applied for other few schools Whitgift, Trinity, KCS. Hope for the best!

Hi, I am very happy that my DS passed the stage 2 exam for 11+ exam. We received 3 separate emails from Wilson, Wallington and Sutton school that my DS passed the Entrance Examination. They also mentioned that passing the exam does not mean ''offer of a place'' due to oversubscription. They will send the offer in March 2023. This is bit confusing to me. Is there any way to understand which school will send him offer? Thank you.

You have to submit an application to LA listing the schools in order of preference. Also include at least one non selective in case he is not allocated the grammars.

Quartz2208 · 20/10/2022 13:28

You now need to decide what order you place them in.

DD passed both Nonsuch and Wallington - but Nonsuch is much closer (20 minute walk) so I put that one first and that is the one she is at in Year 9.

If I had put Wallington first that is what I would get.

Given he has passed all 3 I would say Sutton Grammar and Wallington are a 95% certainty and Wilsons probably around 50/50 (not all who pass get in).

So which do you prefer and in which order and put in your Secondary School Application via your local council. You have until Monday 31st October to get that in. If you dont you wont get any of them!

CatChant · 20/10/2022 13:40

It means your son has qualified for a place at all three schools.

But actually getting a place at each of them depends on how high his score ranks against the qualifiers applying to each school. Every year more boys qualify than are allocated places.

Rank the three schools in order of your personal preference - your son will get the highest of your preferences that his score merits.

Do put down other state schools on your form too. Independents don’t accept every candidate either, no matter how academically able they might be.

But to have passed the SET for all three I should think your son stands an extraordinarily good chance of gaining a place at one of them.

PatriciaHolm · 20/10/2022 14:24

As others have said, far more boys pass the test for each school than can be offered a place. For example, 784 boys passed for Wilson's, but they have an admittance number of 186; 901 passed for Sutton.

Of course, many boys, like yours, pass more than one, so in the end most boys who pass will get a place at one of the schools they pass for - but not all. Depending on the relative scores, and where you live, it is possible not to get an offer. So put the schools in genuine order of preference, and also put down a realistic local non-grammar option should you need it.

Thank you so much all. Yes, now this is the time for me to wait. Let’s see what happen in March 2023.

NadiaAmy · 01/03/2023 18:35

Hi all.
I am very happy that my DS got offer from selective independent schools including Kings College School, Wimbledon, Hampton School and also from Wilson Grammar School. I’m now confused what to do. Can anyone advise about these schools, which one should be the best. It will be very helpful to know if your DS is the student in any of these schools and your experience with these schools. Thank you so much.

@NadiaAmy - May I know which school did you choose?
