Did online tutoring work for your child? What would you recommend (or avoid)?

I'm looking for advice & experience from mums who have put their dc in secondary school through online tutoring. What kind of tools did your dc use (e.g. e-whiteboard, online learning tool) ? Do you feel like your dc made progress and why? Did you feel like you were involved enough in your dc's learning experience? Which online tutoring would you recommend (or not!!) and why? Thanks so much!

My dc did tassomai ( science, math). However, it does not cover practice aspects. No one can replace a teacher.

To put my 2p in (secondary teacher with primary aged DS who had a tutor).

Online remote is great E.g. Kahn academy etc for learning subject fundamentals. Having a qualified teacher/tutor to work through problems with is an efficient way of getting things right/learnt/understood.

Having a teacher in a classroom either read or explain stuff and then go away and do the work is not the best use of anyones time.

“Flip the classroom” and e.g. go watch a video all about electron shells and then sit with the trained person to work through the related questions and discuss together.

Ooh also…practicals E.g. in science are great but tbh most up to GCSE and even A-level can be done at home with a trip to the chemist/eBay. Also look out for local collages/uni/sci museum etc hands on days or local HE groups may organise them. (Also a local science tutor may be able to arrange a group to do this).

We employed tutor through MyTutor for gcse French (listening and speakingin particular). He gave lessons once a week on zoom, plus ds was set about 45 min each week to prepare for the lesson. Worked really well, tutor provided all additional materials and was knowledgeable about exam technique. Not cheap though.

Is this because you have a child you are thinking of getting tutoring for, or market research?
