I work in a rough school - tough kids. Year 10 boy today 'oh Fuck.' (I was over the other side of the room, so 'couldn't' hear - I have ears like a bat) Then said to friend I forgot, I can't swear in this lesson' Whoohoo success

fizzbuzz · 24/01/2008 21:03

Alas, feel like I have had no successes today....am sure they all just ran riot

I don't know about anyone else but I am sick of moaning at them. I am not their mother but seem to nag at the front some days. I wouldn't do any other job though

tigermoth · 24/01/2008 21:36

I admire all you secondary teachers - you have so many challenges. I am truly in awe of you

fizzbuzz · 24/01/2008 21:40

They are just so bizarre...

A y8 was making chicken noises the other day and pretending he was an ostrich Why? Is this normal for y8?

A Year 7 boy ate his pencil yesterday. We now call him Ralph.
I get called mum at least twice a day. And more worryingly....... sir. Long hair check. Big boobs check. No stubble - check.
Skirt on - check.

janeite · 24/01/2008 21:48

No, they usually wait until Yr 11 to start that! Cue: Yr 11 boy, jumping on the dinner lady's back and asking for a piggy back - wtf!!!

I still love my job though; on a more positive note, Yr 8 were gorgeous today and even Year 9 were almost sane!

Asgoodas · 24/01/2008 21:51

Any funny stories to cheer us up before an exhausting Friday?

fizzbuzz · 25/01/2008 09:33

You can hear my worst ever thing that took place, in 12 years.

Friday afternoon (lovely)Y10 class p4. Strange girl appears in class I kick her out, and write incident report. bell rings for next (last lesson)

I go to phone Y10 office about strange girl in previous lesson. Go back to my room. 2 Y10's hiding in there, won't come out, strange girl has threatened them and they are too scared. Go back to phone Y10 office..........Meanwhile vile Y7 class (last thing on Friday) lining up outside classreeom, with vilest boy in whole school.

Return to classroom. All lowlifes in entire school have mysteriously arrived to view "fight" in my , between hiding Y10s, and strange girl as mentioned earlier(spreads like wildfire) Finally get rid of them, and get girls out of room. (All other staff on trip so only me) Return to Y7 lining up outside room who have in fact, not been lining up but running wild whilst I sort out above probs ON MY OWN. Vile boy has discoverd 8ft plank of wood in corridor and is running up and down corridor with it. Wrest it off him, and get them in class ..little did I know....

Do register..., vile boy not there...some sniggering in class Vile boy under table, making stupid noises. Am so fed up with everything leave him there to get rest of class started...giving him no attention you understand.

Go to help someone, vile boy gets phone out and does happy slapping thing. Turn away to write note about him before sending him out, Whilst I am doing this, he takes masking tape off my desk, and wraps it round and round another innocent pupil, essentially tying his arms to him. In desperation, I kick him outside.....he sets off the fire alarm.

All this happened in about 5 minutes, but it felt like hours and hours. Still look back in horror at that time, although very funny now, was awful when it was happening

OP posts:
fizzbuzz · 25/01/2008 09:55

He didn't just wrap it round, he mummified him........

I am reading horrified! I think I teach same subjects as you and can't believe they would behave in such a way in lessons that must students love. I think I am in a bubble where I teach! Why does it always happen on a Friday?! I really feel for you as practical subjects are hard at the best of times without all this happening.

fizzbuzz · 25/01/2008 12:31

That was the worst thing in 12 years, it isn't normally like that!!!!!

AND, it wouldn't have been the problem it was if there were other members of staff present, but it was only me trying to deal with everything, and was just impossible on your own.

Lucycat · 25/01/2008 17:35

oh god fizzbuzz - that is awful! I bet vile boy was back in school pretty sharpish though was he?

It must be the time of year, even my delightful Year 9 today were silly, wouldn't listen and I had to stare down one girl until she looked down at the desk for talking while I was. Year 8 just need to grow up.

btw I went on a trip to Martinmere wildfowl centre with my dd2's class (Reception) on Monday and they were an utter joy, keen, they listened, asked pertinent questions -why can't my year 8 be like that?

fizzbuzz · 25/01/2008 17:50

It was a few years ago.

Vile boy was excluded, and later permanently excluded. Strange girl in classroom was also permanently excluded as this was the last straw in a huge line of incidents.

Now I think you must all think I can't control my classes!!! But vile boy was exceptionally vile, for everyone, not just me. He apparently enjoyed my subject best , but because I wouldn't let him do what he wanted he would misbehave...Whenever I sent him to withdrawal room he would always reappear back in classroom, after lutking on corridor for a bit. Wasn't I a lucky girl?

Lucycat · 25/01/2008 17:53

ahhh back in the day when you could get rid of 'vile boys' and they didn't just get chucked back you on appeal

nice to know you were so popular!

roisin · 25/01/2008 18:20

Students were very loopy in school today. Cabin fever - too dark, cold, wet, miserable. Too many cover lessons. Resentful of being forced to do any work because 70 'rich kids' are on the ski trip this week!

I had stroppy, bolshy yr9s after lunch (drama cover - non practical though), and they were pretty awful.
I had to send three out
Actually, they're not stroppy, bolshy. At least half of them are perfect angels: that's what makes me so mad at the others.

Fortunately I didn't have the last lesson of the day (also yr9s) in drama, as they were a lot worse apparently.

janeite · 25/01/2008 18:22

Mine were all human day, strangely! Even the "vile" girl from yesterday, was all sunshine today. One thing with this job - it's never boring!!!

fizzbuzz · 25/01/2008 18:35

Drama covers , now they really are something else

Heyyyyyyy! itrs the weekend! We made it!

smartiejake · 25/01/2008 19:06

How do you do it? I am in awe of you all! How on earth can those who want to learn progress with this sort of mayhem ensuing. It would drive me into an early grave. Ladies I take my hat off to you.

alfiesbabe · 25/01/2008 20:04

Ooooh what a fab thread. Love the idea of a cyberstaffroom - just don't sit in my bloody seat you lot!!!
Lol at being called 'mum'(usually cute Yr 7s) and occasionally 'sir', but has anyone else been called 'gran'?? I wasn't impressed either.
Anyway, my Friday wasn't too bad - off to crack open the wine now

roisin · 25/01/2008 20:57

I tell you what happened today as well, that we haven't had recently in our school.

4 (particularly pleasant) PGCE students had their last day, and they had bought prezzies for their subject mentors and main contact/supervisor, plus big tin of choccies for all, and they did a presentation/thank you in Briefing.

Blandmum · 25/01/2008 21:30

Since I shifted to part time, I don't work Fridays. However today i found out that we are being ofsteaded next week. Deep joy!

janeite · 25/01/2008 21:39

Oops - good luck MB. We had ours last term and it went really well - they do seem to be getting more and more human, the longer I teach.

I remember my very first Ofsted when I hadn't been teaching long. The registered inspector watched me twice in one day and then arrived in my room at hometime looking really serious. My heart sank, my knees knocked. He said "I have to tell you that the two lessons I saw today were both rated excellent" - cue much hysterical giggling on the part of Janeite; I'd thought he was coming to sack me or something!

At least now, most of them seem to know how to smile.

Hope it goes okay for you.

Asgoodas · 25/01/2008 22:11

Lol Alfiesbabe - never been called gran!
Good luck MB. It wasn't that long ago that our school was in special measures so I'm quite used to OFSTED sadly. Mock SATs next week for us - boring invigilation where I count their tatoos, those wearing trainers, etc.
