Triple Science in Wales

DD is just going into y10. She's been doing triple science for a year in year 9 but she struggles with it. She works really hard but her test results are usually around 40% and this is disheartening for her. She suffers from low confidence with regard to education for various reasons anyway. She struggles with Maths in particular and has just been moved down to set 3. I've been to see her teacher as I think she has a better chance of doing well sitting higher science instead and he thinks she has 'earned her place' in triple but has left the decision with us.

I know that she will get three GCSEs rather than 2 but apart from that are there any other advantages to her doing all the extra work that triple entails? She is very hard working and will want and need to concentrate on her strengths (music and languages). Science has never been her thing anyway so she's just doing it because she has to.

As I understand it the only degree triple really makes a difference to in terms of uni admissions is Medecine, which che doesn't want to do.

Is there any reason why she should not move down a paper and might the school want to keep her in triple for their own reasons? All they repeated to me was that she wasn't the weakest in the set. That's not really a reason for me.

The start of Y10 is a bit early to make this decision. I think in Wales there is the possibility of taking the first GCSE science exams at the end of Y10, but not all school do this.
The advantage of taking 3 separate Sciences is that you can mix and match the different tiers. If Maths is an issue this has the biggest effect on Physics. So if you are taking Triple Science you can take Foundation Physics and the Higher papers in the other 2 Sciences.
The other thing you haven't mentioned is timetabling. If pupils have extra teaching time for "Triple" Science, what would your dd do if she moved to take the Double Award? If the teaching time is the same for both options, this would not be a factor.

Thanks for your response.

Her teacher has told me that Christams is absolutely the latest for her to move. She's been doing triple for a year and has done lots of module tests. They will sit the exams at the end of year 10 and with WJEC I am pretty sure you can't do different tiers but I will ask. Her y9 exam grade was a D.

They are not timetabled more time to do triple, so that won't be a problem.
