Co-ed Sixth form schools in Oxford

My daughter is going into Year 11 and we're looking for some co-ed sixth form schools in Oxford. She loves maths, physics and computing, is academic and she also likes sports (cricket and badminton mainly).

We've heard about a few schools like MCS, St Edwards (Teddies) and d'Overbroeck's. Some say that MCS is a hothouse. She can handle academic pressure but would prefer a holistic education.

Anyone got any ideas about which school could be good?

Does anyone happen to know whether day pupils in d’Overbroeck’s are allowed to stay for dinner and after school study without any extra cost? It doesn’t seem to mention it on the website.

Absolutely love d’Overbroecks and their ethos. New principal starting soon but lots of established teachers so doubt it’ll change much. Not sure about the tea and pretty sure they don’t charge for after school clubs etc.
St Edward’s excellent but hard to get into though if she’s keen on Cricket the girls cricket is really building so she could go for a scholarship.
Cherwell supposed to be good for 6th Form too.

That’s great! Thanks! Any ideas about Magdalen?

You need top grades for MCS, and they will ask you to leave if you are not on course for top A level results.

D'Ov has good reputation.

MCS is too much pressure, not a particularly happy place imho (son went there). Cherwell is brilliant. I don't have much experience of d’Overbroecks but don't think it's anything special.

So say if my daughter did get into MCS with majority 8/9 in GCSE and if she wasn’t on track for A*-A at A-Level, would she be forced to leave?

I want her to have a holistic education, MCS strikes me as a hothouse…

We’ll have a look at Cherwell thanks!

Matthew Arnold has a fantastic physics department. Also very strong in Maths.

I reckon MCS think A*-B's are acceptable. If you're looking like getting C's, then my friends son was asked to leave. Of course, there may be more to it, but I think it was because of the grades.

Lots of good choices esp for the ‘bright and motivated’
state - Cherwell and Matthew Arnold
private -
D’overbroecks good for those looking for a more collegelike experience
MCS if you want highly pressurised (I would only send a very psychologically robust child on track for top grades across the board)
Teddies more rounded

i would also look at wychwood (know 3 people with very happy daughters who have got top grades and gone to top universities from there) and slightly outside the city if the above don’t suit - Bloxham is a very holistic option and whilst not stellar academically gets plenty of top grades

There is also CokeThorpe and our lady’s in Abingdon - I’m less familiar with them but have colleagues who again speak positively of them

thanks! We’re thinking about Cherwell for now, that seems good to us
