What degree with these A levels?

DS has to make a final decision about A levels. He's chosen maths, French, politics and philosophy.

I'm slightly surprised by this- his best subjects are maths and languages and I'm surprised he hasn't gone for further maths or another modern language or Latin (which he's great at and enjoys). He's never studied politics and has only done a little bit of philosophy lower down the school.

It's good to be able to keep a broad range of interests but I'm slightly worried that this combo won't leave him with many degree choices. Presumably he could do languages (French plus another from the start) but will it count against him that he doesn't have two language A levels? Or he could do politics or philosophy or PPE or law. Economics maybe but I think some unis like to see FM if the school offers it. Is there anything I'm missing?

Any advice gratefully received.

International relations?
Quantity surveying (ideally as an apprenticeship which would save you all a fortune!)
Global humanitarianism- or variations on this.
Lots of joint honours courses out there.

One language is fine for most Modern Language degrees - I think it's only Southampton and Lancaster who ask for two. He'd need to show lots of interest in and aptitude for languages and cultures generally, but only having one at A level is no problem. Most courses start with one at an advanced level and one ab initio. Some universities like an essay subject too, so politics and philosophy would tick that box.

Leafy3 · 26/08/2022 12:21

I think that's a great mix tbh!

PurpleBrocadePeacock · 26/08/2022 12:41

This is similar to my interest at that age.

I studied a mix of modern foreign language and philosophy at university but now work in IT so use my maths skills a lot.

Another friend who studied French with me, went down the human rights/law route. These interests can lead to a variety of jobs.

Forconfessingonly · 26/08/2022 12:46

Great mixture I think.

Does he have any ideas about what degree he wants to do?

Piggywaspushed · 26/08/2022 12:51

PPE is the obvious one to me.

Porcupineintherough · 27/08/2022 10:02

Sounds like a perfectly good, harmonious mix to me. Gives him lots of options.

clary · 27/08/2022 10:51

Yay that he wants to do MFL! V few schools ime even offer the chance to take two languages at Gcse, so he can certainly do a language degree. He could do BA French, joint hons with phi or politics, or yy two languages, with second ab initio. Unis would have trouble filling their courses if they insisted on two MFL A levels. Even Southampton mentioned by a pp will consider syder a candidate

clary · 27/08/2022 10:54

Sorry posted error. Southampton Will consider someone with ab A in French anc no German for French and German.

Mfl is my subject and I can only recall one student doing two at A level - she went tk Oxford.

Lots of other options are also open with those choices- law for example.

Just a thought - is German instead of French a possible? If it's AQA the boundaries have been MUCH kinder to Germanists in recent yes.

LIZS · 27/08/2022 11:00

One language is fine for most mfl courses as you can often take Ab Initio subjects and many schools cannot timetable more than one, or Linguistics, joint honours of IR and a language for example and so on.

Dancingdreamer · 27/08/2022 18:55

What about a language and linguistics degree? Or international business degree which has a language option? There is also an interesting languages and cultures course at LSE that may be worth exploring.

Go on to Sacu Student, and he can plug in the A levels he’s considering, and it will show what degrees people with those A Levels have gone on to study. I like it because often there’s not much difference if you only change one or two subjects , and I think that can be reassuring …
