Year 9 - 2022/2023 Support Thread

Hi
Having got a lot out of the thread for my ds who's just finished year 11 I though I'd start one for anyone wanting support/chat about dcs in year 9 from September.

Some schools will be starting GCSE syllabi this year and for those that don't there'll be options later in the year.

I have a dd starting year 9 in September. Her favourite subjects are languages and chemistry. We've not taken gcse options yet - that joy is to come.

@NotDonna - I wanted the Mallory towers life too! All midnight feasts with ginger cake and sports matches with high tea! Alas it wasn't to be.

Exams all finished here. Dd had 35 minutes checking time in her 60 mins maths exam! 🤣

Well ds is on his first night of Bronze D of E. expedition. Its so hot here, and staying that way all weekend, better than pouring rain obviously, but even so, all that walking carrying very heavy rucksacks… 🥵 hoping he doesn’t come home burnt to a crisp!

NotDonna · 26/05/2023 19:07

Ugh DofE @MissyB1 I did bronze & silver centuries ago and tried putting my DDs off. But only DD3 has taken heed. I recall fir Bronze camping in hideous mud on the practice & then burning my nose and forehead on the real thing. I was better irritated for silver and only returned with blisters. Even better prepared for Gold by simply avoiding! I did enjoy them though. Hope he has a fab time!!

minisnowballs · 27/05/2023 08:28

Well, we are off to the girls' grandma's for the week this morning - DD2 has taken more revision books than mid-GCSE dd1. I have never known her so motivated for an end of year test so they must have really bigged it up. The flute has come too but she has an exam in it next month so fair enough.

@NotDonna amazing to do so well in English without too much reading, she must be brilliant at analysis. My dd1 wants to take Eng Lit a-level - she certainly isn't the voracious reader I was at her age and I reckon she'll have to pick up her pace. Glad they've picked it up now even if they didn't before.

@DataColour DD2 can stay for sixth form - her government scholarship thing should cover to 18... a bit of me is hoping she might be back by then, but I'm suspecting she either won't be or will choose another boarding music school. She is bouncing with excitement about boarding - the whole thing is very Malory Towers, and she's just waiting for her house allocation. We are somewhat less thrilled and I'm spending a lot of time putting name tags on everything, even the underwear.

NotDonna · 27/05/2023 14:44

Yes. Whilst I would have lived to board O wouldn’t like my own to. Miss them way too much so totally understand your feelings @minisnowballs It’ll be an amazing opportunity for her!

Oblomov23 · 13/06/2023 06:23

Ds2 doing exams this week. He'll be put in groups for year 10 based on these results, for many subjects. Got an email to say they are extending the maths 'sets' from 10 to 12 groups and I told him I don't want him slipping from 'set' 2 into set 3. I emailed his maths teacher to check his progress and whether he was secure in the middle of the set and tell her I didn't want him dropping. I told him this too.
But he's done bugger all revision. I've offered support, insisted, cajoled, but maybe I'm not being tough enough?

QueenMabby · 13/06/2023 07:20

@Oblomov23 - best of luck for your ds for his exams.

I wouldn't worry too much about the numbers on the sets. It's more important that he's in a set where he can flourish alongside an appropriate teaching pace and peers he feels he can compete with.
My ds (now sixth form) used to tank in the top set. School moved him down and he was so much more comfortable. Got a 9 at gcse from set 2 and is now doing maths a-level!

The only issue would be if a move down would limit him to the foundation paper but he's capable of higher than a 5 for example.

Dd nervously awaiting her results. Should be Friday. She had a great day out yesterday at a schools MFL translation bee and ended up regional winner! Off to the National finals at some point but it doesn't seem overly well organised so there's no date for that yet!

Thanks Mabby.
I know this, it is my only concern is that he stays in a decent set, that has the chance of the higher paper.

MissyB1 · 13/06/2023 19:42

Ds finished his year 9 exams last Friday. This week they are on a residential for a few days, at a lake doing some watersports and team building type activities. He will be back Thursday but the house is very quiet without him!

QueenMabby · 14/06/2023 08:04

@MissyB1 - I'm sure ds will more than make up for the quiet once he's back!

Dd gutted to find out that she actually won't get her results until next week. Ds (L6) gets his on Friday.

DataColour · 14/06/2023 10:18

@QueenMabby Good luck to your DD regarding her results next week. Well done to her for her regional success, that's amazing!!

Regarding sets, it seems a bit of a mystery to me at our school. As far as we are told there's only one accelerated set for Maths and it's mixed ability for all other subjects. Although I think PE has 2 sets too to cater for the more sporty. We weren't told if the end of year tests were to be used for setting them in year 10, they just said it's to track progress and provide intervention if needed.
DS did say that they are going to narrow the accelerated maths set and offer further maths to that set. Not sure if DS will make the cut, he is in that set currently and he did do well in the test, but not sure if it's enough to be in that top set next year.

QueenMabby · 14/06/2023 16:15

@DataColour - sets are a bit of a mystery to me too. Ds said that they were set for English for gcse and he was in the bottom or next to bottom set but he got an 8 and a 9 in Lang and lit so that can't be right!

We def set for maths with two parallel top sets both doing gcse FM. Dd is good at maths so will be top set most likely.

As to the rest - no idea!

OP posts:
MissyB1 · 14/06/2023 16:37

We won’t get their results until next week at the earliest I suspect. I know he took them seriously and he revised so I will do my best to be positive about whatever results he gets. Ds works steadily at school and does all his homework etc but has a habit of underperforming in exams.

DataColour · 15/06/2023 09:48

@QueenMabby perhaps all sets in your DS's school sat the higher tier paper? Ours is a grammar school and they do this. So, perhaps that's why ours don't set for anything other than Maths, top set doing FM in addition.

@MissyB1 a quiet house for a few days, how lovely! Hope your DS enjoyed himself on his trip.

minisnowballs · 15/06/2023 10:19

At our comp, the top three or four sets sit the higher paper (and that's with parallel sets, so eight classes in total) so there's definitely more access to maths higher than there was in my day, where only 1 and top of 2 sat the higher and everyone else intermediate.

I worried less about maths sets once I realised that.

That said, the higher paper can be very inaccessible to those who are not top set (even my DD1, who is bottom of top set, knows that the last two questions are not 'for her')- but you can get a pretty good mark with a quite low percentage, so it really is very different from what you might expect.

Their school only sets for maths and science, and science is just a set one with mixed ability below.

With assessments nearly over, DD2's friendship group in Year 9 are all terribly stressed about moving down a set. She is stressed too and no amount of me pointing out that she's not going to be there is stopping her worrying.

She's like Schrodinger's child at the moment - both focused on Year 10 at current school, even though she won't be staying, and Year 10 at new school. It has not escaped my notice that she has imported the new school's calendar into her phone and knows more about their masterclasses and trips than she does about her own!

I'm trying to help her to prioritise as she's crazy busy. She has the school musical, plus just had a zoom audition for musical at new school, and a concert at saturday school this weekend where she's playing two pieces. And D of E bronze next week.

Actually the thing she should probably be focusing on is Grade 8 flute next month, which really will be relevant next year, but when all your teachers talk about the focus being maths and science tests that isn't easy to work out. It was all less stressful when I was her age.

minisnowballs · 15/06/2023 10:19

oh and @QueenMabby well done to your DD - what an absolute star she is!

icanbewhatiwant · 16/06/2023 17:24

Ds1 wanted to do the higher maths paper for gcse. He was in set 3. Set 3 and below took the lower papers. He said he found the exams easy. He got 5's which was as high as he could get. But maybe it's better to find it easy than to be struggling. He had to do a maths course at uni along with his biology degree in his first year. All those who didn't take A level maths had to do it.

Ds2 was also in set 3 but was due to take the higher papers, much to ds1's annoyance. Covid meant he didn't sit the exams though. I think ds3 will be top set.
I thought ds3 said he didn't have any end of year exams. But he has. The maths one will be in the school hall like an official exam. They are next week and the week after. I just had his end of year data report. They always give gcse predictions based on primary school attainment/sats. I know our cohort didn't take sats. But it annoys me that they don't base them on their work now.

QueenMabby · 26/06/2023 11:15

A great week for dd last week - end of year exam results and a run of A stars in all 12 subjects! I have no idea how she does it.

Only 2 weeks left for us until we break up. The year has flown by.

Oh wow brilliant results! Ds did fairly well but only just scraped through maths/physics/ chemistry his 3 weak subjects. We have chatted about the step up in year 10 in terms of study time at home.
We had sports day last week which he was very proud to get first in triple jump and 100 metre sprint. Yes only two more weeks here as well, where did that year go??!

QueenMabby · 26/06/2023 14:52

@MissyB1 - great sports day results for your ds - well done! Dd is happiest doing nothing at sports day. Ours is next week and she's dreading it!

Can't believe it's onto GCSEs from next year. Dd actually takes one next year too - that'll be scary!

OP posts:
DataColour · 27/06/2023 14:14

@QueenMabby wow well done to your DD that's amazing! I can't even imagine get top results in 12 subjects, she must be very able!

@minisnowballs Sounds like you have a very busy girl and good luck for her flute exam, hope it goes well! Is she going to continue with further exams after Grade 8? My DS is working on his grade 7 piano, hopefully do the exam later this year or early next year.

@icanbewhatiwant Our school said they base the GCSE predictions on CAT scores and school work. I wonder when they do the predictions, we haven't got any yet. our school doesn't seem to be very communicative about things and I don't know what's going on half the time, despite having 2 kids there!

@MissyB1 well done to your DS on his sporting achievement!

It was sports day last week for us. Each child had to sign up for one event and DS won the 400m sprint, as expected I think as he's one of the best runners in his year group.
My DD in year 8, was forced/encouraged to do 3 events as it's a very boy heavy year and some of the girls just refused to take part. She came first in the 800m and pretty well in the other ones.

icanbewhatiwant · 27/06/2023 14:20

@DataColour that's a better idea, predicting grades on current work. Ours say based on primary attainment. Then we get another score for working above, working below that grade. The predictions were fairly spot on with ds1. I may have said that on here already. But ds2 didn't take GCSEs due to covid.

DataColour · 27/06/2023 14:32

@icanbewhatiwant we get a mark for each subject and the year average. Overall DS seems to be "average" with some subjects above average, some average and some below. I'm already worrying a bit about whether he's doing the best he can really at the moment and how it's going to impact his gcse grades, perhaps silly to worry at this stage. His CAT scores where high, above 130 as average with a 141 for NVR which gives his predictions of 8s mostly, but his school work doesn't seem to reflect this.

icanbewhatiwant · 27/06/2023 14:50

@DataColour I've never heard any of my dc's mention CAT scores. I don't know whether their school have them. Ds has his end of year physics test today. He's convinced he is going to go down a set in science and in maths. He's always had very high expectations of himself. I'm sure he will be fine though. Yes...we never know whether they are doing their best or whether school are predicting correctly etc. I said to Ds this mon...what will be will be. Ds still hasn't been told what options he will take.

stickygotstuck · 30/06/2023 20:28

Knock knock - may I come in?

I am the proud owner of a Y9 DD and @Oblomov23 alerted me to this thread - thanks!

In a rush so just placemarking at the moment. Will pop in later.
