My son's year 10 PPE results were worrying bad and it was somewhat of a shock. I was expecting some drop in level because of the home schooling during the lockdowns but he seemed to drop a few levels down. However, our school gives us the average results and highest grade received for the cohort so it looks as if the whole year struggled. Having spoken to his teachers they said they weren't worried blaming the pandemic and year 10s not being used to exams etc and they took into account past test papers taken in class. I really hope this is the case. I've made sure my son knows how important it is now to really knuckle down with his revision - he is so laid back. He is aware that if he doesn't earn the necessary grades, he won't be able to continue in sixth form, which I don't think he'd considered before I actually showed him the grades required on the schools website.

That's where we are. He's going to have to do a lot of work this year to get he grades to do A levels.

Could do with some company to go aaarrrggghh with!

Infracat · 21/08/2022 23:29

Please can I join. I also have a DS going into year 11. Struggled with recent bronze PPEs and Im worried.

Hellocatshome · 22/08/2022 07:31

What are PPE's?

Silkierabbit · 22/08/2022 13:27

I have a DS going into year 11 and a DD just done year 11 and taken GCSEs.

Remolina · 22/08/2022 13:46

There are 3 threads for the same cohort literally next to each other as a type!

OurLipsAreSealed · 23/08/2022 18:39

Tbh (really hope my post doesn’t come across as a negative) the most important thing for me is that DC gets through Y11 mentally well and if they can gain any GCSES that will be fantastic!

DC has had multiple things going on, as well as the disruptive 2 years due to Covid, not any of it their fault, so it will be a blessing to reach the end of Y11 in a much better place.

I do feel incredibly sad that their secondary school years were incredibly difficult and I hope a change of school (huge decision) will have a positive effect.

So whilst GCSES are important having my DC here with me is more so.

OurLipsAreSealed · 23/08/2022 18:45

And I never EVER thought I’d be typing the above when DC was in Y7 - seem like such carefree days.

So please don’t stress about your DC GCSE results, yes they are important but they can still be achieved later, mental health is paramount.

Just wondering which thread is going to be more active, this one or the other one?
DD starting Y11 beginning of September & the workload she's had over the summer is massive.
Plus the school want all the children to do intervention which means them staying an extra hour each day at school to get on with work.

As far as I remember back when I did my GCSEs just over 30 years we didn't have all this extra pressure & stress & everyone seemed to do just fine (well those who cared about passing their GCSES with a good grade back then A was the highest you could get!

I've got ds going into year 11. I honestly have no idea what he's likely to come out with. He's reasonably bright, and has amazing knowledge-in what he's interested in, but everything else is less than bare minimum.
He's also got various health issues which means his attendance is between 80 and 90% so he's always missing work.
And halfway through year 10 they decided he could use a laptop for exams which looks like it may have shot him up a few levels in subjects with lots of writing-in one subject it changed his exam from a 4 to a 7/8 borderline in a month. But I don't know if that was a fluke too.
I don't know how he does in exams, and revision is something that other people do - he regards it as borderline cheating Wink

I foresee lots of arguments with me saying "there's an afterschool session you should go to", and him saying "no"!

dizzygirl1 · 23/08/2022 21:32

Can I join too DD going into year 11. she was given high target grades at the start of Yr 7 hasn't really helped. French she hates and has dropped significantly, her French teacher is making her go for extra sessions during lunch when she goes back, she really isn't looking forward to that.
Maths she's dropped a couple of levels and she asked to go to tutoring so she did 3 sessions last term and already felt better so hopefully it will be worth it!
Otherwise, she's bright and can do well but doesn't revise. She's not done any mocks yet, so I think once she gets those results it may give her a knock.
I'm trying nor to pressure her, as she thinks I want her to get 9s, so it's a bit a of tight rope walking.

I did look to see if there was another thread before I started this one but obviously missed it Blush

@Silkierabbit - that sounds intense to be going through GCSEs two years in a row. Good luck to your eldest for tomorrow.

Silkierabbit · 24/08/2022 12:31

Thanks very much Circle Hope you have a nice holiday.

Yes it will be 4 years of exams in a row - this year the first of that and I was doing chemotherapy for breast cancer whilst DD was doing her GCSEs and the school decided to say can't meet needs for year 10 DS at the same time who has an EHCP and no other school would take as not enough school places in his year so not been the easiest of times. DD will do fine and has a summer job punting, but DS still has no education and quite ill with the stress of everything and not doing anything at home.

I was on previous y10 thread but he is struggling so much it feels more like SN board than a GCSE thread though he's very bright and was originally on for all 8s and 9s. But now not even sure he will be entered for anything.

CornishGem1975 · 24/08/2022 12:41

In the same boat, waiting for DD's results tomorrow, DS doing his next May.

katedan · 24/08/2022 13:40

Place marking as I think this is going to be a very rocky year. I have twins so 2 x the tantrums and upset. They get one GCSE result tomorrow as they sit RP a year early hear. I am very worried about the talks of teacher strikes and 3 day weeks for schools due to cost of heating and on the back of Covid that would be a disaster for this year group ( and give kids in private school even more advantage) sorry will stop worrying, it is nice to meet you all.

BumblingBy · 24/08/2022 17:56

Eek so much to relate to here. My DD is very relaxed about doing any actual work this holidays but then winds herself up into knots about the stress ahead. I can’t get it in to her head that doing a bit now would ward off some of that stress!

PritiPatelsMaker · 25/08/2022 08:21

DD gets one GCSE result today as well. Just praying it's not as bad as we fear Grin

This is exactly like my DS.

Due to his year 6 SATs he was put in the gifted and talented bracket at secondary and given target grades of 9 in Year 7.

I admit, I dropped the ball a bit as my youngest was having severe school issues due to undiagnosed adhd at the time so my focus was on him, my eldest DS's target grades were dropped each year pretty much, he's now target grade 6 or 7 for most subjects.

His most recent assessment grades were averaging at 5 or 6 and I don't know whether I need to worry yet or wait until the mocks to start panicking 😐

DS is autistic so it's hard to get his focus off his gaming and he just doesn't revise. He also kind of rushes through his work and does the bare minimum.

It quite often takes him 3 hours to complete an hours worth of homework just because he's upstairs in his room which is where his PC is, but bringing him downstairs to do his work seems a bit unfair (like I'm 'watching' him) and he doesn't react well to being watched.

He's got intervention in English for an hour after school starting in Sept but I'm surprised that so far, school haven't raised any concerns about him.

I'll join. Ds needs a rocket up there to get him serious

jamimmi · 25/08/2022 10:19

Hi I'll join you two. Dd anxiety already increased and she said yesterday she wants to stop dancing as she needs to work. She loves dance! I forsee lots of anxiety for no good reason year 10 exams were good results.

DD has got a 4 today in her GCSE so I think a rocket might be needed here too. Her BF was predicted a 9 and got a 6 so I'm thinking that the exam was harder than the school anticipated.

Wrote an essay, should have just posted this - sums my DS up perfectly 😂

Tallulahbel · 25/08/2022 10:39

Does anyone know when mocks are next year?

I'm guessing at early December based on the posts on our school's FB page last year but we haven't actually had any communication about - anything really to be honest!

May have been mentioned to DS but it would have gone over his head, don't parents get first hand info from schools in yr10/11?

CornishGem1975 · 25/08/2022 10:43

My daughter has just finished Year 11 @Tallulahbel and we had about 3 sets of mocks last year - but I don't know if that was because they were still expected to have a covid contingency in place.

CornishGem1975 · 25/08/2022 10:43

My DD got her GCSE results today and did better than she thought. Now I need to try and spur DS on for next year...
