How does online tutoring work?

Hi all,

If your DC is having tutoring online, how does it work and does it work just as well as 1:1 in person?

Want a tutor to help support maths for DD, just to keep up with secondary school. I always thought in person would be better as they can bring their resources to you (or at theirs) and can fully see the way they draw/diagram/support up close.

How does it work online? What would your advice be?

Thanks

DS, slightly older, has had 1:1 remote tutoring through Tutorhunt. It worked out really well. We chose the Tutor and did a couple of trial sessions and they worked out pretty well.

I tutor and during Covid I went online with it. It was a struggle for some students. Because of my subject I am most often working with students who are not I school, and that can be related to issues around being ND, so I found some preferred in person work.

Otoh some people do prefer to be remote. And it did mean I could work anywhere. I had a student in UAE at one point.

Overall it works OK as long as students put in the effort to learn and practice tasks. I can share my screen and we can work interactively so it's perfectly workable.

Also online might be cheaper as no time or costs (for anyone). And it saves bother about the tutor taking over the kitchen table (tho that might be fine of course)

Online tutor here (English not maths so definitely not advertising).
For some children, online tuition works extremely well. I set up a shared whiteboard for them which only the two of us (plus parents) have access to. This is accessible after sessions so the student can go back and revisit any work, click links that I may have provided and carry out any homework I have given. It is like an exercise book online. During sessions, we are also on a video call (I use Zoom but there are plenty of others) so we can see and hear each other. The online whiteboard updates on both ends as each user adds things, so the student can answer something and I can add/highlight/correct things just as I would in a face-to-face session.

You may want to invest in a graphics tablet if you are looking for an online maths tutor as it does make things easier for maths.

I would always ask for a trial session with a tutor whether they are face-to-face or online (expect to pay for this). In my experience, you know after that first session whether it is likely to work.

Thanks for all the info. I have a graphics tablet so that's a good point to remember.

Okay- I'll start the search.

Online works well for secondary esp, as tutor doesn’t need to carry/search for resources, and can just share from laptop/ PC. For maths, would recommend Desmos as pupil/ teacher can turn page around for angles, etc. Also, any whiteboard should be useful. We use Bitpaper w Zoom. Good luck.

I am currently using an online tutor through MyStarTutor and my daughter is doing really well.

I'm a tutor and did in it online during COVID. Face to face is definitely better - easier to draw diagrams, point to things, explain and also I found it harder to built a rapport with the students online. Online is fine if it's the only option, but I wouldn't choose it if you have the choice.

My ds has been doing online tutoring for maths for a year now. His tutor requires the use of a tablet with pen and use of Skype, and then they have a shared whiteboard so ds writes out the problem and his tutor talks him through it and corrects what he does. Seems to work very well, and no different to if it was in person
