Admission in KEGS - Sixth Form for overseas students

My daughter has scored over 97% in this years examinations in India. She has applied at KEGs as external candidate, how are the chances of securing a seat in Sixth Form. We are flexible on relocating to Chelmsford since we have recently moved to London from Mumbai, India.

I may add that she has already secured a place in Wimbledon High School on the basis of written test and interview. However, she would prefer to be in a Grammar School since she is academically inclined girl and feels that Grammar School would be far better than Independent School.

We aren’t too sure if there is parity in the marks obtained in India vis-a-vis GCSE. Would someone be kind enough to throw some light? Many thanks

Grammar schools aren't necessarily more academic than independent schools - you should be able to look up the results of both schools on line and hopefully others here can comment on the general ethos of these schools. I don't know either of them I'm afraid.

Good luck to your daughter

Don't know anything about the Grammar School but assuming it's very academic, I would have thought the main choices for her and you as a family come down to whether you want single sex or mixed in sixth form, fee paying or free and the biggest- whether you want to live in or near Chelmsford or Wimbledon?

@Sanjayc this is a complicated question as it is difficult to equate entry to a private (Independent) School such as WHS with entry to a state school as an essentially an overseas candidate. It is much easier to be certain of a place at an indie school (and presumably you have paid your deposit etc for a September start?) regardless of ability. Have you asked the KEGS admissions team for the entry requirement equivalent? Just so you are clear, KEGS is the Boys Grammar School which also admits girls into the 6th form. CCHS is the equivalent girls school which also has additional places at 6th form. Admissions to both are GCSE grade dependent and age dependent . However the deadline for entry this September for the 35 places at the girls school expired some time ago. The girls school is clear that you would have to demonstrate state schooling entitlement and a right to reside in the UK. KEGS is less clear on this point do you would need to establish that with the admissions team. The boys school allows applications up to the day of GCSE results day. However for KEGS entry is age, grade dependent AND availability of teaching subject. This would be a disadvantage if your daughter wanted a place to sit either vastly oversubscribed subjects or undersubscribed ones where a class size is not viable. There are roughly 50 additional places available to the best candidates of either gender. This makes it extremely competitive entry as your daughter would be competing against candidates of both sexes. in short, the Wimbledon place is certain but fee paying (assuming you do not qualify for a bursary place). You also need to consider the fact that you’ll be liable for the autumn term fees at WHS as you are out of time to give notice on the place she has starting in September (again, assuming that this is not a bursary place)? I don’t think anyone here will be able to give you specific advice about chances of a KEGS place other than someone from their admissions team. Good luck to your daughter with her 6th form place wherever she chooses.

Hi SanjoyC, I have a similar situation for my son who wishes to join lower sixth form in London this year, he has cleared CBSE 10th exam from India with 97% and we are relocating to london on work, would deeply appreciate if you can please share your experience since it is one year since you have posted.

Thanks in advance

Any other parent has gone through the same or known someone with a similar situation, please respond and that would be a great help
