Ripon grammar school

ivyilovecc · 03/07/2022 19:48

I am currently living in Leeds and want my kid to enter Ripon grammar school.
I tried look at the website of North Yorkshire council and could not find out the catchment area of Ripon grammar school. could anyone help please?

If we are not living within the catchment area, is the chance very low to get in the school even my kid could pass the exam with a very high mark? Thank you in advance.

If you’re not in the catchment area (which is shown on the interactive map on the council website) then I think there is zero chance of getting a place. Unless you are thinking of boarding?

Thank you for your reply. Will boarding only count on high pass mark of the exam for Ripon Grammar School?
Do you have any idea about Ermysted's grammar school and Skipton Girl's School? Do I have to live in the catchment area in order to get it these schools? Is it still low chance if I am living out of catchment area? thank you in advance.

Ermysted's is boys only and Skipton girls only, so you couldn't apply for both for the same child!

You would need to contact the schools as they don't publish last distance offered on the admissions tables for North Yorks, but depending on where you are in Leeds, that's a long journey every day.

Thank you for your reply. I have a boy and a girl. That's why if I have 0 chance to Ripon grammar school, I am thinking to try Ermysted and Skipton girl if I have chance even I live in Leeds.

If the kids are lucky enough to get in the schools, I will move to Horragate. Shorter the journey. thanks.

Is there a reason why you are looking at those schools? There are lots of fantastic schools in Leeds or Harrogate - if you’re considering moving I think you’d be much better off moving into catchment for one of those.

lanthanum · 04/07/2022 23:42

There are good schools in Harrogate - you'd be better looking at those than having your kids commute that distance.

@ivyilovecc DS managed to get into Ermysted’s, and we are out of catchment.
From my understanding if child scores high enough they are considered if out of catchment.

Thank you for your information. I see their admission policy. They will give place to students who are living out of catchment area if no oversubscribed. You let me know I can still have chance.

Do you know about Skipton girls school? thank you.

I don't have any experience with Skipton girls school, but I'm assuming they have a similar admissions policy. I say this as both schools have a bus service that starts near us (about 20 miles). Hope that helps 😊

The Yorkshire subforum looks very quiet but overall the site I've linked to below is the go-to place for prospective parents discussing catchment areas & pondering mammoth commutes etc.

Thank you very much for your reply. I may have a try on Ermysted's grammar school and Skipton Girl's School.

Skipton grammar schools have an inner catchment and outer catchment. The outer catchment is 12 miles. I think if you’re in the outer catchment as long as you have a qualifying score it then goes on distance from school. I don’t know if anyone further away than ilkley getting in.

SweetsAndChocolates · 05/07/2022 14:53

@Cyclingforcake in the opposite direction (so you're in Lancashire), the furthest is approx 20 miles.

That's information for this year, as DS will only be starting in September, so it may vary year to year. The school bus runs this distance through the Lancashire towns into Yorkshire.

True - but the OP lives in Leeds so I was sticking to info about the other direction. The catchment is huge but you won’t get in from Leeds. It’s a selective school aiming to educate the top 25-30% of local children based on 11+ scores. Not a super selective that takes from anywhere.

AccountHere · 05/07/2022 16:56

Exactly. The whole of Bradford would get in before you got to Leeds!
OP I really think you need to reconsider your plans.

SweetsAndChocolates · 05/07/2022 17:13

@Cyclingforcake apologies as you're correct.

Op I'm talking about a different side to your location, so 20 miles away from school this way (I.e into Lancashire) will be a different set up to 20 miles into Yorkshire (and towards Leeds- I believe).

Think it'll probably be easier for you to find a school closer as suggested.

o.. that means 20 miles from school (into Lancashire) may have a chance. However, I'm living opposite direction. I am zero chance. Am I right? I'm a bit confused. thanks

Yes that’s right, unless there is some fluke you have zero chance living in Leeds.

I live in Leeds. Dd is very bright but I’m not considering the selectives In Ripon or Skipton because I know she won’t get in. Instead I’m looking at the local schools where she can walk in and make friends with local children
