Hi,

Would anyone be willing to share how much they pay for 11plus tuition (1 to 1) in London? I've been given a price and just want to see how it measures up. (And yes, I know that the answer will be "a lot"!)

Thanks in advance!

@SandD - English is a tricky one for boys and it all comes down to practice and also comprehension (understanding).

I paid for a Tutor from End of Jan until Oct the year of Exams (probably had about 30 sessions max) and I was extremely frustrated with my tutor during the process as they where very rigid.

I worked along my son and worked on his weak spots as 1 hr a week tutoring and a bit of homework wasn't working.

I went back to basics and got him to interpret questions, taught him meanings of certain words, how to look for clues to answer questions (comprehension)

Writing- I told him no more than 1 page and focused on technique to build confidence and we started with doing one paragraph at a time until he got it.

Also planning was key so we worked on how to plan on writing a story within 4 min.

DM if you need to know anything more. My son got an amazing school I'm South London so we are happy.

Paying £70 per hour. We’ve decided to do an hour a fortnight with the tutor for exam prep since April and our kid does approximately 30 - 40 mins practice questions / papers around 3 - 4 times a week.

The plan is to do this up until the exams. We decided to get a tutor to help with exam technique, time management / speed and setting homework at a suitably paced level (working up to harder questions).

Our child didn’t need any catch up work on a particular subject just confidence to sit an exam which is completely new to them.

Good luck 😊

Hi,

I am someone that is starting up a tutoring business. I am a qualified secondary school English teacher and have Phd in literature from a Russell Group University. Where would you say is the best place to advertise to parents?

Hi, can you share your maths tutor details please ? My DS is in year 5 now and I am looking for a maths tutor for his 11+ preparations.
Thanks in advance,
Uma

A few months ago we paid £60/hour for a math teacher from a grammar school through an agency who took 20%. He was completely unreliable and quit 3 weeks before the exams.

We then switched to a math student from Imperial College who did an amazing job. He had been through 11+ himself and knew all the content and exam techniques. He was £30/hour. He lives in SW London and happy to pass on details if you pm me.

Both face to face at our house.

My DS, got into St Paul's, and is very good at English and essentially it comes down to reading. He pushes himself all the time with what he reads, fiction, non-fiction, travel writing, cookery books, newspapers and magazines. We have a rule about reading for 20 minutes every day, usually he reads more. We did little informal comprehensions ( I don't think he realised we were doing them) on stories in the news to encourage critical thinking but it was all verbal.

We've paid between £50 and £70. South West London.

DS got into StP and from what I could see they look for a ‘type’ of boy - confident, engaging, curious, sparky… he was a bit of a tigger back when he was that age and his interview went on for ages as he and the interviewer were having a good old blether about the essay he wrote on the day.

It’s advisable for the children to have interests that aren’t all academic or trying to show how smart they are (so not ‘I build combustion engines in my spare time, my goal is to discover a planet, I’m working on my pilots licence’ etc).

Something that they enjoy and are happy to talk about.

Can anyone suggest a fair rate for a central london 11+ in person tutor who comes to your home please? I’m thinking £60-£85 per hour but am struggling to get much of a sense. Thanks.

We used a math student from Imperial College last year who had been through the 11+ himself (this last part is really important - people who have been through it themselves know what to teach along with technique). We found him to be far better than the two older "experienced" tutors we tried via an 11+ agency. The math student charged £30/hour.

Have you got a local nextdoor website where you are? You might be able to find someone local on there.

We have an English tutor and she charges 70£ for one hour of class. We enquired a maths tutor for him and she said she charges 120/hr and have to book at least a 2 hour session. So that would be 240 a class. We found it too much and didn't go for it. English was online(same rate if we opted for in-person class) and maths was in-person class.

The university student I used advertises here. If you put in your postcode it will bring up local people who will come to your house. Look for a university student who has ideally gone through the 11+ themselves:

Depending on where you are in London, I can also pass you the number of the guy I use as I think he still tutors as he is still at university. He lives in SW London.
