Ds attacked on the street. Police called.

GazeboLantern · 13/05/2022 21:11

Ds is in Y10. After school today a group of boys from his year attacked him on the street. He was knocked down and punched and kicked. Fortunately ds does not seem badly hurt.

This was in front of witnesses, both from their school and strangers, and the attackers tried unsuccessfully to hide their identities. An unknown adult intervened and rescued ds. The police were called but did not attend. Apparently the police told ds they would contact us in the next couple of days. Ds returned to his school, and told his HoY.

Ds suspects he was targeted because he is a prefect and tried - legitimately - to stop some teenagers going into an area where they normally are permitted but today were not.

What would you expect to happen next?

Terrible. Hope your DS is ok.

No idea what happens next, but sending support.

Hellfire2 · 13/05/2022 21:35

If it's anything like my kids school, nothing

Didn't happen in school grounds so they don't want to know.

I hope you son is ok, poor kid

Nevergoingtobemrsjones · 13/05/2022 21:37

The police will more than likely have words with these kids and that will be the end of that
the same thing happened to my dd years ago and that’s all that happened even though she was badly hurt and her new school bag/most of her new uniform was torn to bits

Cherrysherbet · 13/05/2022 21:37

That’s awful op. Nasty arseholes. I hope your son is ok.

carefullycourageous · 13/05/2022 21:38

You should ring the police yourself now to make sure it was recorded and say you want action taken. Get the crime reference number.

Take a written statement from your DS yourself for future reference.

Request a meeting with the Head tomorrow to ask what will be done in school.

This is a violent crime in public, school should take it very seriously.

itsgettingweird · 13/05/2022 21:41

I agree contact the police yourself now.

Ask them why they didn't attend to a situation where a minor was actively being assaulted.

Ask them what they are doing next. How are they going to take action to make sure it doesn't happen again and isn't worse next time.

Hope your ds is ok

alexdgr8 · 13/05/2022 21:41

do you mean that he tried to prevent them entering somewhere outside school grounds ?
that seems rather foolhardy, esp if there are a group of them.
ok to state a rule, but tell him not to put himself in danger by antagonising an unruly group in an area where he has no back up.
i may have misunderstood the situation. sorry this happened. hope he's ok. is it worth being a prefect if makes him a target. i would keep my head down and avoid trouble.

Foolsrule · 13/05/2022 21:44

I’d call the police again and report it again. They can’t just do nothing! I’d also get him checked out by a Dr so that any potential injuries are recorded. I’d be looking at taking legal action against the perpetrators. If he can identity them, all the better. I’d be telling the school that there is a criminal case going on and until it is resolved, DS needs to be kept away from his attackers for safeguarding reasons.
Well done to the adult who intervened too. Do you have their details?

BreakinbadBreakineven · 13/05/2022 21:52

Take pictures of any injuries. Phone and report it, give the names of the perpetrators/witnesses if you can. I would pursue this via the police direct and not the school. Get your son to pen a quick account of what happened before he forgets bits. Depending on if they have any previous they might be eligible for a caution or community resolution, or if this isn't their first rodeo, a youth court order. Hope he is ok-kids can be such shits.

GazeboLantern · 13/05/2022 21:55

No, that was in school. The attack was off school grounds.

I can't talk to the school until Monday. Gives me a few days to work out what we need to do. We have never had anything involving the police before.

I expect the police did not attend because both ds and the rescuer stranger spoke to them and stated that the attackers had fled and ds was not seriously injured.

Ds hasn't said anything about a crime reference number (I'll ask him later on).

At our school it would be investigated and the attackers suspended/excluded. We’ve had 2 such incidents in the last week!

Sorry I forgot it is Friday Hmm

You should still phone the Police and I would email school now as this is very serious. The Head can read it over the weekend - send it direct to them not reception etc.

Are you very shocked? I was wondering why you do not ask your DS for the reference number now. It is best to get on with things really. You need to speak to the Police to be clear what is happening next. If nothing is happening next - you need to ask them why not.

FT96 · 13/05/2022 22:00

I hope your son is okay, such an horrible incident! Maybe try to follow up with the police yourself and talk to the school on Monday. They will have to do something about it.

He's in the bath.

I've taken photos of his bruises.

OP, are you in South Cambridgeshire?

allboysherebutme · 13/05/2022 22:21

I'd make it my business to find out where they all lived and go around to the parents and say if they ever hit your son again, I will come around and do the same to you. X

sorry for the repeats; the site has been misbehaving. again.

Felix125 · 14/05/2022 04:08

If it happened outside of the school, then it will down to the police to pursue it - the school can (and should) put safeguarding in place whilst he is at school however.

If the attack was over and the suspects had fled the scene, it would be downgraded from an emergency - this is why the police did not attend and will see you in the next few days.

It should have been cirmed (or 'skeleton' crimed) from the initial call. They now need to speak to your son to get his account. It will depend on how far you son wants to pursue the matter. The police would look to prosecute and get them to court - although there are various 'out or court disposals' which will come into play. If it goes as far as court, there may be a chance he will need to stand in court to provide his evidence (all sorts of help & support if it happens - so don't worry). Or would he be happy with 'words of advice' or some sort of restorative justice in stead. Youth offending team will also become involved.

Don't forget you can access you local victim support services for help & support too.

GazeboLantern · 14/05/2022 10:03

Thanks, Felix125.

I wonder whether a uniformed talking-to in front of their parents would scare these brats into behaving themselves - or thrill them.
