My son has an Ehcp and I’m looking into mainstream non-selective independent schools but have no idea where to start.
they need to accept a child with ADHD.

also any recommendations for state schools in this area or nearby gratefully received.

Kew House?

JurasicPerks · 29/04/2022 15:26

Richmond North Yorks or Richmond London?
Because my suggestions are about 250 miles from your first answer!

Sorry Richmond, Surrey - London area tw9.

@ELD83 , Ewell Castle or at a push St James's Ashford (they are getting more selective).
Out of your immediate area try Downsend in Leatherhead.

Unicorn is worth a try (if Primary level). The new head is very experienced with such things.

Thank you all for the suggestions I am going to look into them all. Obviously Kew House seems to be my closest recommendation and then I have briefly read the ethos of Ewell Castle so I will need to do a lot more research.
any other suggestions would be welcomed.
thank you again.
this is all new to me. State Secondary Schools in the area and locally do not seem great! Unless anyone has suggestions on that too?

State secondaries in Richmond/Kingston are some of the strongest in the country. But if you can afford secondary then fair enough although most of SW London indies for boys are highly selective. Limited choices - Ewell and Leatherhead really are some distance.

LivesinLondon2000 · 30/04/2022 10:27

Have to disagree that state secondaries in the borough of Richmond aren’t great. Greycourt School for example?
But there are some great not-as-selective-as-some independent schools too including Radnor House and St James’s in Ashford (gorgeous building & grounds)

Nowfeeltheneedtopost · 02/05/2022 14:13

Where are you getting your info that state secondaries in Richmond aren’t great? Goes against all the published and local information. If you are talking about school able to support students with ADHD then you need to be more specific rather than damning all schools. Grey Court, Waldegrave and Christs all good in terms of SEN provision.

Nowfeeltheneedtopost · 02/05/2022 14:14

Sorry, see you are asking for your son so Waldegrave not an option (until 6th form)

My DD has ADHD and and EHCP. We had a really bad experience when applying to Ewell unfortunately. I got the impression these school really did not want to bother with kids with EHCPs. They dismissed my DC out of hand without even giving us a chance to discuss it or even speaking to her current school to understand her needs. Hopefully you will have a better experience OP!

Have a look at Canbury School in Kingston.

The EHCP should pay the fees and any extras for therapies.

Depends on the EHCP and his needs but Halliford school and st james aren’t biased and will take based on exam results and interview - they take a rounder picture of the boy than most schools in the area. Hampton court house is worth a try .
Radnor not taking SEN children anymore or very few - they are looking to raise their results - I don’t know any that got in this year or last year with anything other than mild dyslexia

Mylife2000 · 05/05/2022 23:55

Halliford in Shepperton or St James in Ashford. I'm pretty sure both have school bus services to Richmond or the train connects.
