Has your dc's school put any extra revision classes on for GCSE pupils?

My DD's hasn't but other local schools have put on sessions after school.

After some weeks of revision where DD seems to be going backwards from her mock results, I'm panicking a bit. She has some gaps in her knowledge which might have come from the second lockdown in Year 10 where she engaged much less.

The school do lunchtime clinics as a regular thing but nothing in particular has been put on this year in the way of 'catch up'

I think my DD has reached her capacity to study independently, after having to do it so much in Yer 9 and Year 10, plus two periods of 'learn everything' revision exsns/mocks by the start of term 2 in Year 11. I'll be glad when it is all over!

After school sessions (45 minutes) in selected subjects since October.
Revision sessions over Easter (1.5 hours per subject - aimed at targeted students.
Waiting to hear what they will do this term, although I guess every lesson is pretty much revision now!

DD is not keen on the school revision sessions - she much prefers to work independently, so I guess it depends on the individual student. I think the number of tests/mocks they've had to do this year, they are probably "revisioned out" by this point anyway.

RedskyThisNight · 19/04/2022 11:20

I should say this was the same as that offered in terms of revision/support pre-Covid, so it's not intended to be "catchup" specifically.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 19/04/2022 11:22

We have 1 hour after school for a variety of subjects but we can't make attendance compulsory, and most students vote with their feet. We also tried to run Easter intervention but we again had several staff with Covid and had to cancel most sessions as other staff couldn't cover (mainly as they would need to pay for childcare themselves).

Yes, it has happened all year but I can only remember last term's sessions. Over a 2 week period he is in study support for 7 of them. It is usually limited to no more than 3 sessions per week. However, science is every week as my son and other more able students were chosen to move onto triple science content which isn't offered as an option subject but they were confident they could get through all the additional content and they have.

The one session we really want is MFL but that wasn't on last term. Ds is very high achieving so this isn't intervention study support but the school just doing what it usually does and being able to say that they literally did everything they could to assist GCSEs.

There were also sessions on over the Easter holidays which Ds did attend. He is very conscientious about his studies.

Is there any way your DD could buddy up with someone to test each other?

My secondary always starts them now, after the Easter holidays. They are after school and are invitation only, to keep the groups smaller.

maddy68 · 19/04/2022 11:50

It depends on individual teachers. I offer after-school revision classes but I dont always depending on my own commitments
I never do lunch lessons because I don't have long for lunch and by the time they have eatemd it's not worth it

Loads looking at the emails that come through. They run Saturday school, holiday residential intensives and vast amounts of catch up sessions. Today was INSET for everyone except Y11 who had intensives on Maths, English and Science.

Massive school with a lot of teachers so I assume that is how they get it to work.

countdowntonap · 19/04/2022 20:45

The nearest secondary offers:

  • Additional revision for an hour after school 4/5 nights a week. Compulsory for all subjects.
  • half/full day revision in Oct, Feb, Easter and May holidays
-Saturday sessions (mostly half day) -use of National Tutoring funding to pay for intensive revision for small groups of targeted students

Staff are paid for additional hours and vast majority of students/parents support the sessions.

autumnboys · 19/04/2022 20:46

Ours does quite a lot. DS2 could do a different subject after school every night (and usually does). Weekend residential for geography. Plenty of sessions in the Easter holidays and some in the May half term. They take their options in Year 8, which means they finish the curriculum in time for a fair amount t of class based revision.

appleandonion · 19/04/2022 20:51

DH’s school did a bit in Easter and he has intervention one day a week. He also tells his students to come to him at any time.

However, I think that if your DD is struggling you should look for a few sessions with a tutor, if you can afford it. It’s worth it.

Hercisback · 19/04/2022 20:53

Depends on the subject. Some do and some don't. The extra revision classes are over and above a teachers job and they get no extra pay for them (aside from holiday sessions).

CornishGem1975 · 19/04/2022 20:53

Yes, there is a timetable for after school and during lunch revision sessions.

AmberGer · 19/04/2022 20:54

Yeah, after school revision sessions here every day and they put on extra classes in Easter holidays last week (3 days 9.30am-2pm).
Several revision evenings on different subjects, offering advice on how to revise and what resources to use.
Will probably be more when they go back after Easter.
Just a shame getting my DS to revise is like getting blood out of a stone Hmm.
I don't remember getting even a fraction of the support that DS has been offered from when I was at school taking my exams.

Workyticket · 19/04/2022 21:00

I'm in FE but teach a core GCSE subject

I usually offer a day and a half over Easter but haven't this year. I'm shattered with all the extra work this year. DH is busy with a DIY project he has been planning for ages and tbh I wanted to spend the whole holiday with ds and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

My classes will be revising every lesson between now and the exams and have links to every resource known to man via Teams.

Workyticket · 19/04/2022 21:03

I've answered any polite queries that have come in via Teams about revision but I've ignores those that literally say "mark this" or "send me work" with no please / thanks

CareBearsCare · 21/04/2022 17:27

My son is at a comp and has extra lessons every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Thursdays are always maths and the other 2 days have varied
