Attainment levels for year 7. Can anyone explain these results? Is the target too high?

flamehead · 06/01/2008 15:12

My daughter is in year 7 and has just had the following results in her report.
The results seem very varied and the targets for end of year 7 seems very high to me for a child in year 7.
Can anyone advise please? What is she doing well in and what needs improving?
She achieved level 5 in Maths, Eng and Science at Primary.

Maths 5c target 6c
English 4a target 5a
Science 6b target 6c
Art 3a target 6c
ICT 5a target 6c
Geog 5b target 6c
History 6c target 6c
Language 2a target 3b
PE 4c target 6c
RE 4a target 6c

Thanks

why are you bumping up old threads with the same post ibizagirl?

julieolutiti1992 · 10/06/2013 18:53

please can anyone explain this to me, my son is in year 7 and the end of the year result is maths 5c, RE 4c, science 4c and the other is not out yet. please is this bad?

EvilTwins · 10/06/2013 18:56

It depends on what the end of yr 6 results were. Expected progress is 2 sub-levels over a year.

julieolutiti1992 · 10/06/2013 19:01

thanks, SAT result in year 6 he got 4 in English, maths and science, this show he is not better at all.

MadameDefarge · 12/06/2013 15:37

julie, there is always a bit of a discrepancy between end SAT levels and levels at start of secondary, as secondary will do their own assessments. RE will be a new subject, so 4c is fine. 4c for science might indicate no progress, but again, it depends on whether his 4 from SATs was a true reflection of his ability at that time rather than teaching to SATS. Maths 5c absolutely fine.

Its only year 7. A tough one for them both academically emotionally and socially. He still has another two years of KS3, and looks on track to do well.

Swan99 · 19/07/2013 14:24

I have just received my sons first secondary school report and am slightly confused: he has all of his targets set at 6a, the report states that " KS3 - End of year target based on two levels progress." However what I understand from this web site is that these are end of ks3 targets not end of year yes? Also the targets are, for most of you it seems, to be an individual thing but his are stated to be "External targets" in which case how do I know what I should be expecting from him this year? Finaly, he came home with a maths paper last week where his result is 7b and yet his report puts him at 6a (which is what he started high school with, having taken the level 6 exams in primary school).

I can see how this report could make some sense in certain places once the real peramiters are known, but there are many anomilies ...... is this normal or ought I to be seeing the head and asking for a more comprehensible report?

Many thanks for reading.

EvilTwins · 19/07/2013 16:12

Sounds a bit confusing. I am guessing here, but if it states End of Year target, then I expect that's what it is. The 2 Levels of progress thing will be across the key stage, so if his end if year target is 6a, then next year will be 7b and the end of KS3 expectation would be 8c. That assumes his KS2 levels were 6s.

EvilTwins · 19/07/2013 17:25

Yes, but the poster above me posted a genuine question, today. So your big shouty "ZOMBIE" was a little uncalled for.

Swan99 · 20/07/2013 10:49

Thankyou for your reply Evil, I see what you are saying however take for instance Spanish which he has never studied before, that too is set at 6a with no hope of him achieving that goal this year, so might it be the end of the year at the end of KS3?

IIjkk, I have just joined mumsnet on the understanding that this is where I can find help from like minded people with similar problems and experiences, I think you may be in the wrong forum. Should I wish to indulge in inane play ground abuse I will be sure to call on you.

Swan - schools seem to have their own way of doing things... Where I teach, English, Maths & Science targets are set directly from KS2 results, and ALL non-core targets are set from an average KS2 result. So if a DC gets 5,5,5 in KS2 SATS, all KS3 targets will be 7s, even in subjects like languages and drama, which many have never done before. It sounds like your DS's school used a similar system. What those if us who teach non-core subjects do is set our own baselines in the first term, based on what the DC can do, then use that to demonstrate progress. Unfortunately, the "rules" now say that a student should make 2 levels of progress per key stage, so if a child comes to me (drama) with an average of L4 at KS2 but is really shy and not up for drama at all, I could measure their baseline at, say 3b, they could get up to a 4b at the end of yr 7 and still not have "officially" made any progress. The thing to remember is that progress is more important than meeting targets. As long as a DC is progressing, the targets are less significant, as they're often artificially set.

Swan99 · 20/07/2013 12:26

Thank you Evil, that makes sense. Very much appreciate you taking that time for me.

Iamnotminterested · 20/07/2013 19:19

EvilTwins, what would be below/average/exceeding nc levels for drama at the end of year 7?

EvilTwins · 20/07/2013 20:29

It depends entirely on the student... In my classes, I have students ranging from 4a to 7c at the end of Yr 7. It's one if those things though that some DC are naturally gifted at. In Yr9 I have students ranging from 5b to literally off the scale (2 Yr 9 boys got GCSE A grade for one piece of practical assessment work)

There's no such thing as average/expected levels in drama, which makes it easier in some ways.

jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:32

hmm

jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:37

oops! Only just signed up and message didn't appear where I expected it to! Hope the 'ZOMBIE' one doesn't see mistake! I'll be 'ZOMBIED' on my first comment.

jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:44

Are there any parents with children in a Grammar School that had 'predicted levels' of 6b in English, 7a Maths and 6a in Science at the end of year 9?
My son has been in the grammar stream of a bilateral secondary school since Year 7.

jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:46
Hmm
jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:47

Ah! So that's how it works!

jumblebum1 · 05/09/2013 16:49

A zombie thread I know, but happy that my DCs don't go to that VERY SHOUTY school above...

nicp123 · 06/11/2015 21:37

I know it's a Zombie thread... November 2015 brought something new to Year 7 children in my area... They will receive only two grades descriptors for every subject. Assessed and judged for CAP ( Current Academic Performance) and Effort. Just letters and no numbers. "V" and "O" being aspirational= Very Good and Outstanding grades awarded to the top performers. "G" suggests broadly good. Cause of concerns highlighted by "S" or "P" (satisfactory or poor). Did you received your DC Half-Term reviews today?

Hindochapro · 17/03/2016 21:33

Yes my sons seem rather high although his are end of year 9
Year 7. Target
Maths. 7a. 9bSmile
English. 6c. 7bSmile
