Dear All,
I see lot of primary schools publicised as feeder schools and have tie up with local grammar schools especially in buckinghamshire. is it real that if the kids study in feeder primary schools they qualify for grammar school? does the feeder primary school reduce the chances of others entering the grammar schools? how does the feeder schools operate

No, it's not true! The only way to qualify for a grammar school in Bucks, is to pass the 11 plus, or be deemed qualified by selection review.

There are no feeder schools that qualify children for grammars, purely by virtue of attending.

What can happen, is some primaries have a large consort of children passing, but they'd still have to qualify in the same way as every other school.

Bucks state primaries cannot tutor for 11plus either.

There is no disadvantage to a child going to a non-feeder school.

In fact, due to how admissions to grammars work in Bucks, there are no feeder schools.

The only secondary schools that have feeder primaries Inn Bucks, are non-grammar secondaries (such as St Michaels or AVA in Ayylesbury).

I think people use 'feeder' to mean 'those that pass the 11+ at this primary tend to primarily go to X Grammar school (because it's the most obvious from where we live)'.

People use that for non grammar areas too.

We have a linked primary system where we live (all comp area) which gives kids out of catchment at linked primary priority over other out of catchment children.

Yes, it’s important to understand whether it is a genuine feeder primary that gives priority over children at other primaries (which we have in our local LA), or whether people are just referring to it as a feeder school because ‘most kinds go there’.

A bit like people referring to a catchment area, when they just mean the area that usually gets in, rather than a defined boundary within which you get priority.

If you look on the school websites the admissions policies are on there. You will see that none of the Bucks grammars have feeder schools.

@Player456 has summed up the situation as it pertains to Bucks perfectly.

There is no such thing as a feeder school, merely schools which send a lot of children to particular grammar schools.

cherryonthecakes · 12/03/2022 15:31

People are using feeder incorrectly. They mean people at this primary often go to grammar.

(I live on Bucks border where lots of kids travel to Bucks grammars so very confident on this)

Player456 · 12/03/2022 20:05

@cherryonthecakes Exactly, there are no primary schools that act as feeders into grammars in Bucks.

I live in Bucks, have two children that went/go to grammars here (both came from double entry (60 children in one year), primaries, where 7 and 4 (respectively), went to grammar from their peers, so probably even more confident.
