Epsom College v St John’s (Leatherhead)

Still struggling to decide between Epsom College and St John’s (Leatherhead).
DD has received a few offers which we narrowed down to these 2. She is fairly academic and quite sporty (swimming, running, strong interest in sailing).
Thoughts and insights into these schools would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

Hi there... congrats to your DD.. both are fantastic schools

We made our decision a couple of
years back - opted for EC -
and there's been other threads since then on the same subject

Ive cut and paste below a response a year ago that someone put on re. Epsom as it's such a good and true review and it really helped me.

As follows....
One key difference that helped when we were choosing ...Epsom in Y9 has v strong house system for all students including day pupils. Housemistress/master and matron for each house and that’s where pupils spend breaks, free periods etc. Tutors in house who are responsible for a small group of students - academic and helping them take advantage of all Epsom has to offer. Any problems of any kind go through house mistress who responds immediately and helps parent or student navigate all the other teachers . The senior members of staff across the school are all very approachable. I know the head and he knows my DD but he'd not be the person I'd speak to for any help or issues. I guess some people might but never needed to. Might chat to him pitch side at a match from time to time.

We liked that it was still a boarding school. It's probably about half and half day and boarding and it's not a school where one group or other are second fiddle. But means staff mostly live on site and are v committed to school life. Also, because of boarding a slightly more diverse student population (ethnic and nationality) which mattered to us.

Students all seem to know each other and teachers know them. The teachers are involved in all sorts of things - coaching, running societies, leadership positions, and as a result the students have lots of contact with them and the teachers know them well.

Students work hard and do well and they are encouraged to join in - sport, music, drama, plus all sorts of other activities - DofE, science clubs, debating, etc. Loads to get involved in. School day is 8.20 to 6pm and Sat morning plus sport sat afternoon. So everyone does sports and choice of activities during school day.

Academic results good. (Published on the website by subject if you want to see and compare.) A lot of v bright kids in the school and with a variety of other talents too. DD is not super academic but is doing better than she expected with their approach- lots of block tests and feedback works well for DD.

It's pretty full on so you have to think that will suit your child and family. DD does keep up one hobby outside of school but she has to be super organised and doesn't do a lot else. Had she gone to St Johns, there might have been more down time as think it's shorter school day and no Sat school (just matches I think)

Super helpful! I have taken all of this in and wondered if anyone might also be able to share their recent experience or views of St John’s.

Thank you so much!

@LeniMum be aware of the big leap in fees at Epsom. This stopped it making our list. Not sure about St. John’s as it was not one we looked at

Hello again!

Any insights into St John’s anyone, particularly around the academic stretch of pupils?

Hi there, current parent at St John's here. We are very happy with the school and have no complaints at all. There is a huge range of activities: sport of all kinds, drama, art, music...

Both schools are very good so you will have a tough choice. What swung it for us was that we didn't want Saturday morning school. However, they are expected to play sports matches on Saturdays so you have to factor that in.

Funnily enough I could have written the previous poster's description of the house system, as applied to St John's! It's very much house-based, they go to their houses for all breaks and free periods, and that's where the social life is organised. There is a strong relationship between the students and their housemaster, and also with tutor/housemaster and parents. That was really important to us in such a big school.

Our ds is not super-academic but has been challenged to the best of his abilities. Some pupils are, and they definitely cater for academic high fliers too.

TuttiFrutti · 28/02/2022 10:28

Also, it's not true that St John's has a shorter school day. Our ds doesn't get home till 6.15.

I can't speak for Epsom but we have been incredibly impressed with St. John's. My DC moved from somewhere more academic on the books and although is now slightly higher up the ranks in class than before, it's absolutely not a case of there not being academic stretch. There is also a great house and pastoral system.

Other points to consider are - Epsom have ALOT of intake at year 9 . Around an additional 80-90 kids (but I'd checkout the facts here).

Epsom have prep between 5-6pm and then kids get the buses home. They can leave at 5 but most stay to do prep which has been great for us Halo but our daughter doesn't get home until 6.45

They have a carousel of classes which are like after school clubs between 4-5. These can be photography, climbing, cheer leading, debating etc or just extra sport if that's their interest

If I think of anything else I'll let you know. As I said both are great schools and it's a tough choice

Invaluable input, ladies! Appreciate your time and view points.
DH seems to be leaning quite strongly towards St John’s at the moment but the tide has tended to vary (sometimes intraday;).
In any case, we’ll have to ‘seal the ‘deal’ literally in the next couple of days.
Thanks so much!

@LeniMum, what did you decide finally? We had an offer from Epsom and a couple of other schools, and just confirmed for EC, so curious...Smile

Sunnyside77 · 19/05/2022 20:33

Hello, we are also going for Epsom. Do you have a son or daughter and where do you live? I have a son and we live in Putney

TeaandBook · 23/05/2022 22:44

@Sunnyside77 We've got a son too, and live in Carshalton :-)

Tw1mum · 25/07/2022 13:58

@Sunnyside77 my son also starting Epsom and we’re in Twickenham :)

lolo99 · 04/02/2023 20:27

How does your son find the journey? We are also in TW2.

it’s a long day (coach pick up is from the end of the road) but at 6.55am and he gets back at 7.20pm 😵‍💫 BUT all homework is done at school plus so much sport / music / drama etc each day so once he’s home he can just chill.
