English Tutor - what to look for

Hello,
I am looking for a GCSE English tutor for AQA.
Unfortunately I do not have any recommendations from school or other parents.
I have been trawling through the tutor boards and I have messaged a few that seem to have experience in teaching exam board for a few years and also have some experience of being an examiner.
What should I specifically look for in a English Tutor?
My DC is good at comprehension but when it comes to writing she really struggles.
She does need to consistently spend time each week working on English which does not happen at the moment.
She is in Y10 and I do not have any indication of her grades etc. yet.
I know in her assigned homework pieces she averages a 4 or 5.
This could improve over time but in general she does not have confidence when it comes to English.
And no, her reading for pleasure has dwindled over the years unfortunately!
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much
Xx

I looked for a tutor who taught the exam board school used and who had an approach/manner that would fit well with my DC.

I have a friend who tutors English f you'd like me to pm you her details.

My DS was predicted a D at one point and ended up with an A. She must have done something right!

Someone whom your DC likes and who can motivate her and interest her in the subject. Someone who can work on the child's confidence and help make the work manageable and achievable. Don't just focus on their knowledge of the subject / exam.

I am a tutor (and teacher!) but am completely full. What I would suggest is:

  • ask around for recommendations. Local FB groups are a good one
  • meet them/call/talk through ideas and expectations

Often it is about chemistry and how the tutor approaches the work set, and ensuring that they work in a way which is complementary to the school's approach, rather than working counter (unless there is good reason) as often this can further confuse students!

Thank you for the replies! Good points to think about.
I agree to finding someone who can motivate her and build confidence.
However, part of me is also concerned she isn't ready to accept the offer of additional support yet.
She doesn't engage when we discuss about bringing a tutor in so I am not sure if she will put the effort in.
Think she worries about the extra homework or revision a tutor will want and she doesn't want to commit.
However we may need to do exactly that - put an extra half hour or an hour each week to get better and I have no idea how to go about doing that.

Also we had an indication of her grades last week. She is current grade 5 a d predicted grade 7 for English. Obviously things will go up or down so I think I will wait for parents evening and see what English teacher says.
But I also wasn't sure if the school teacher would ever say "Get her a tutor"!
