Hi all and thank you for reading this! I was wondering if anyone can recommend a tutor in the SW London/Barnes or even Surrey area who has a good track record at preparing girls for the more academic schools such as St Paul's Girls' School or Godolphin & Latymer? Our daughter is doing well at school and we would like to explore what may be realistically achievable for her.

I realise we may have to adjust our ambitions later as we approach 11+!

Hi @Fingerscrossed2015, in the same boat as you. I'm overwhelmed with the tutoring options coming up in Google search Shock any recommendations would be very helpful and greatly appreciated ! Thanks

If you are serious about those schools, then you better be prepared and that means A LOT of tutoring, preferably starting at the beginning of Year 5. Good luck.

Many of these independent schools insist that tutoring is not necessary. However, we know that tutoring is rampant! The 11+ consortium was created to enable testing that is "fair, clear, robust and accessible to children from all schools and backgrounds". With the covid situation, many schools have opted for the ISEB or CEM tests.

@pkim123 I see that your DD is in one of above schools. How much tutoring did you do for your DD? What is A LOT?

AlJalilia · 23/02/2022 09:49

We’re in a similar situation, although in a different country. The school in question have said that you can’t tutor for the test as it tests innate intelligence. And no amount of tutoring will improve that. I don’t actually believe this. What does everyone else think?

nylon14 · 23/02/2022 22:55

I have found that it doesn't hurt to practice your test-taking skills.

njshore · 25/02/2022 20:00

@AlJalilia, I agree with you. Many of these girls at prep schools have tutors on top to prepare. Even Bute's (girls' prep school in London), a top feeder to SPGS and G&L, former Headmistress is now a tutor. LOL!!

If a student wants to get into a top London day school, then they need to tutor 10 hours per week. Both our DS and DD did similar routines with excellent results. This is very different than our home country of Australia.

nylon14 · 26/02/2022 14:54

10 hours per week is insane. We did 1-2 hours a week with incredible results.

We didn’t do this at all

Just past papers at online format for a month

I'm sure some students did no prep and took the exams with one eye closed and got into Westminster and SPGS. The question is do you want your DC to "roll the dice" or have an excellent chance of receiving an offer?
nylon14 · 26/02/2022 19:58

Yuck. Why would anyone over prep their child? If the school is the right fit, then the rest falls into place. Some of these kids start secondary already burned out.

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2022 20:06

I agree I think it’s crazy

You want a happy child who is capable of keeping up not struggling and stressed

LMAO. What's the definition of "over prep"? My own, perhaps incorrect, definition was a DC should never be upset by any extra work. Simple rule of thumb was if a DC cries or screams then the work is stopped immediately and reassessed. Not once did that ever happen with two DCs. A lot depends on how the work is done. We found older kids working with DCs was A LOT more fun for them than working with an adult. Make it fun, not a chore. Also, break it down into bite-size sessions. 30 mins tops.

DD has two years to get ready for above schools. What is the required amount of study hours per week?
