Ds is adamant that school has told him he can drop French, he plans to do economics instead.
He's more than competent at it but feels no love for it so I don't mind except that I have heard that it could hinder his applications to good universities as they like to see it.
He's possibly Oxbridge capable and if not would be Russell group- can anyone advise if this so case?

Do you mean dropping any foreign language? If so, it doesn't matter unless he might want to do a language degree. The only university that asks for a language at GCSE is (I think) UCL, but they give an option of doing language modules in the first year, so it wouldn't even stop you going there if it came to it.

And I believe that even UCL have dropped that requirement. So yy it won't matter in the future (assuming he has no thought of an MFL degree) in terms of RG or Oxford.

Personally I am always sad when an able student doesn't do MFL; the myth subsists that they are difficult, and I feel a wider education is a good idea.

That said, when I was a teacher (of MFL) I was glad that I at my school MFL was still optional, so I did at least know that my KS4 classes had chosen the subject (and hence might not moan so much about it!). I wouldn't enjoy teaching a student who really didn;t want to be there.
