Gcse predictions and Midyis

My youngest dd is in y9 and has been asking me to show her her midyis report for months as apparently the 'scores' on her reports eg exceeding etc all depend on this! I can't pretend to understand this as her much older siblings were just given 'A' etc and it made more sense. Anyway this test was taken in year 7 and when the report came I thought it was ridiculous predicting her grades in subjects she hadn't even studied so it just went in a random pile. I actually found it today (I did think I had filed it in the bin) and dd is happy but I still don't understand it. Dd is very lazy and does the barest minimum of work and seems to have the memory of a clown fish. Her MidYIS score was 139 band A which seems quite high though my ds said his was 141 (his school didn't give us his results but a teacher showed him,) I just wondered how much reliance is put on these tests and are they just for the school.

Both their scores put them in the top 5%. However it is an indicator and nobody will get across the board high gcse grades without putting in the necessary effort and work. Thus if she continues being lazy and putting in minimal effort during y9-11 she shouldn't expect to do as well as she might were she to apply herself properly.

MidYIS is just an indicator of potential but as pp says without effort the GCSE grades won't flow.

To achieve GCSEs high grades you need to demostrate knowledge and be practiced in the mark schemes. This requires work, even for the brightest child.

Are they at a private school? If so they tend to do follow tests.

Thanks - she is busy choosing her options and armed with these 'chances' she is deciding if she should do Spanish rather than French as it gives her a higher probability of a high score!! Her older siblings were all hard working and keen to make a better future for themselves ( we are on universal credit and she is entitled to fsm) but she is happy to float. She got 119 greater depth at ks2 without doing any work and just goes to school I think to see her friends. Lockdown hasn't helped with most work online so it is more difficult to monitor her Internet usage, homework etc. Hopefully she will decide to make more effort when the work gets more challenging.

Although they're genrally fairly accurate, I think I'd be tempted to suggest taking midyis resuts with a small pinch of salt. DS's midyis 'predcitions' indicated the highest probability of a 9 in a subject he got a 7 in (and this was consistently his weakest subject throughout school), and his lowest probability of a 9 was his best subject by far, and he easily got a 9 in it. I never could fathom it.... So, maybe best to treat them as a guide or an indication, but nothing more.
