Child is so cold

AIBU to ask the school to let pupils warm jackets/coats over their blazers (unbranded so as not to compromise the uniforms etc)? My son, just over a severe bout of covid, has resorted to wearing jumpers under his school shirt as he is not allowed to wear a plain puffa or warm coat over his blazer. Only a raincoat is allowed. He has asthma and cannot shake off a bad cough. He is basically freezing. I have emailed the school but have had no reply. The windows are to keep the building ventilated and NI is such a cold place...plus the school is on a hill, so it is baltic.

Does the school not have a jumper he can wear on top of his shirt but under his blazer? Wearing a jumper under his shirt must be very uncomfortable. Even a rain coat on top of his blazer would be better than no coat surely? But yes I would email the school it cant hurt.

You can ask. My DS wears a t-shirt under his shirt, knee high socks under trousers, a school jumper and his blazer. He also has one of those tube-style masks which also help to keep his neck warm.

His school previously did allow non-branded hoodies and jumpers. That raincoat ruling is madness, kids need to be allowed to wear decent winter coats.

I sympathise - I think it’s unbelievable that we’re expecting kids to freeze.

Has he got thermals under his shirt and trousers, and a jumper over his shirt. Also maybe fingerless gloves and even a hat? These will be less controversial I imagine than wearing a big coat in class.

WizbitsLeftEye · 14/12/2021 15:24

We used to wear a white t shirt under our blouses.

There's vests and thermals.

Yep ventilation seems to be the ‘reason’ all the pupils in DD’s school are exceptionally cold. The school are being reasonable about extra layers but on some days their hands are so cold DD says she can hardly write. If you complain then other parents complain about wanting to leave windows open for fear of Covid. It is impossible to please everyone.

Fortunately DD is in sixth form so they allow them access to hot drinks and a cup of tea now seems to be multi-purpose in warming cold hands and providing warming up from the inside.

My DD has asthma and cold air is a trigger. I hate this policy of keeping the windows open I don’t suppose it does anything to stop the spread of covid

It’s not a ‘reason’ but the reason for opening windows. It’s the only mitigation against covid spread in schools.

HeatonGrove · 14/12/2021 18:41

Get him long sleeved thermal vests and long thermal underpants. They will be much more effective than a jumper under the shirt and much less obvious.

It isn't the only mitigation, there are air purifiers that are being sold to schools but like many things they cost money, schoolsweek.co.uk/dfe-buy-air-purifier-covid-cleaning-unit-dyson-camfil/

DD is freezing! She’s been wearing thermals to school and they are allowing scarves too. Write to the school and ask!

Notcontent · 14/12/2021 20:30

Yes, it is madness not to allow them to wear extra layers. It can get very cold if you are sitting at a desk. At my dd’s school they are allowed to keep their coats on.

user1471443411 · 14/12/2021 22:02

YANBU to ask them. My dd wears a neck warmer thing and has started wearing gloves, but refuses thermal vests or jumpers. She says in some lessons they're allowed to wear coats.

Mojoj · 14/12/2021 22:07

I would send him in wearing his puffa jacket and if his eejit teachers have a problem, tell your son to tell them that his parents do not want him to become ill. They can contact you if they have a problem with that. Common sense has left the building!!

Money being the thing that schools don’t have so yes, opening windows is the only mitigation. It’s not some made up reason as you implied by your use of speech marks.
