96% with 2 days off

I'm scratching my head here. We've just been given DDs end of term report and attendance came with it. It says that as of today she has 96% attendance. She's missed two days since September.
This sounds quite low? Maths is not a strong suit so I can't guarantee my calculations are correct.
Anyone here know if this sounds right before I embarass myself with an email to attendance?

Does it matter? Wouldn't cross my mind to bother about it tbh

RedskyThisNight · 02/12/2021 11:42

2 days as a proportion of 11(?) weeks since September probably does give attendance of about 96%.

My daughter missed 2 days in the first 2 weeks of term; her attendance was seriously low at that point!

Findahouse21 · 02/12/2021 11:43

Attendance only considers the days up until now. That would work out at 2 days absent out of 50 available, which would be 10 weeks in school since September which would be correct.

It's why 'live' attendance can look poor if children happen to be u well early in the year, but looks better later on

dementedpixie · 02/12/2021 11:43

Are they counting it as 2 days off out of the time they've been at school since September rather than compared to a whole school year? The percent will change as the school year progresses until she takes any more time off

Wnikat · 02/12/2021 11:45

(X - 2) divided by x
Multiply by 100

Where x is the number is school days in the term so far.

Fallagain · 02/12/2021 11:45

It will be based on the year so far. If they have been back 12 weeks then that’s correct.

clary · 02/12/2021 12:28

Yep I make it about 96.6 % assuming they have had 12 weeks

If she is not off any more than the figure will rise as the weeks go by

Meadowbreeze · 02/12/2021 12:35

Sounds like it's all good then! Thanks everyone.
@dementedpixie My DC has an EHCP and attendance is notoriously scrutinized at any meeting we have, so for me, any dip in percentage is a big deal and can be used as an argument that provision isn't working because they're not there. Otherwise no, I wouldn't care.

Oh lord im worried now! My DS had barely any time off in primary. Since starting year 7 he's had 1 day off with a injury that involved going to A&E, 2 days with a bug where he was actually ok by day 2 but we had to wait for PCR results before he returned as he'd had a temp, and he'll now be off tomorrow as he's come home with a temp again and has thrown up ConfusedEnvy
We haven't had the best of starts behaviour-wise so I really hope the school don't see his absences as part of the problem. He was genuinely sick each time.

dumdedumpop · 02/12/2021 19:34

(Sorry to jump on your post @Meadowbreeze , but I was stressing about attendance as I read your OP Smile)

Malbecfan · 03/12/2021 12:23

I wouldn't worry too much OP if it's just one episode. As others have said, early in the school year, 2 missed days seems a lot. However, by July it's insignificant.

As a recent form tutor, we were more concerned with patterns of absence. Anyone can be ill, especially at the moment, so a couple of days off with a plausible explanation is not an issue. However, the child who is always off on a Monday, or who regularly has 3 days' absence is of much greater concern. Please don't worry - as a teacher I would far rather you kept your DC at home with their bugs so I don't catch them too!
