Skiing trip in year 11

I promised my DS that he could go on any residential trips abroad with the school as so much has been cancelled and he hasn't had the chance.

Just been informed there will be a ski trip at Easter in 2023 when he will be in year 11.

Just realised this is just before GCSEs. Would it be better to stay home revising or is year 11 very intense all year and he could do with a weeks break??

I doubt the school would do a trip that jeopardises their GCSEs.

Is the trip only for y11s? What's the dates of the trip?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/11/2021 14:33

Sorry just seen Easter2023.

Is it outside of term time? As in the actual Easter break?

Theforest · 23/11/2021 14:34

It's the first week of Easter holidays. I don't know if it's just Year 11 or open to all.

Just had a look and Easter Sunday is 9 April, and GCSEs usually run the last week in May to 3rd week in June.

So a good month between the trip and the possible first exam. I'd say taking a week out then seems fine.

I'd imagine some people will go abroad Easter in family trips.

Mine went every year but it was in half term they did enjoy it and worked hard otherwise. I would say yes

Year 11 is very intense and I think it would be better for your DS to have a break to go skiing. My DS did a Duke of Edinburgh expedition at that time which was not as long as a week but I remember thinking it did him good to have a break.

It also depends a lot how many GCSEs your DS is doing and what the subjects are. Subjects like music tend to only have one paper left by that time as the composition and performance is complete. Whereas if your DS is doing two languages he might be busy doing preparation for the speaking exams which would eat into revision time for other subjects. If he can get organised to make revision notes as he goes along in year 11 there will be a lot less pressure on the Easter holidays. Once the exams start they are spaced over several weeks with half term in the middle so not all revision needs to be complete before they start.

Thanks. I am thinking of agreeing. I think it would be a good break for him from studying.
He is now waiting to see if his friends can go!! Bet the trip will be full before we get to apply..

I think a good idea to have a complete break from studying for a week .

QueenFool · 23/11/2021 19:10

At our ds's secondary they did revision sessions for Y11 during the ski trip , and I think that was in Feb half term...sounds exhausting to me.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 23/11/2021 19:12

Mine had to be in school for revision sessions during Easter of year 11

I let DS go on his Easter Ski trip in Y11. Thoroughly enjoyed it, completely refreshed, great break from all that studying and extra curricular revision lessons he'd been doing since before Christmas. He was a high achieving student though and he still highly achieved in his GCSEs, so no damage done by a week's holiday.

Theforest · 23/11/2021 20:36

Bah. It's full already. No ballot just first come first served.

Oh well. Hopefully there will be other trips being organised now one has been.

I'd have been worried about breaking his writing arm anyway!

Put your name on the fall back list I had to one year, he did get to go. I paid the deposit told them to hang onto it just in case. A lot of circumstances can change for families in a few months
