Can I request to make a pro rata payment for the last term of school fees?

Can anyone give me some advice, my child will be leaving private school at the end of this academic year. I have just seen the school calendar and see that he will only have 6 days of school before his first exam begins, exams will run over 5 weeks. He will not go back to school after his final exam. I would like to avoid paying a full term's fees for 6 weeks of school. Would a pro rata payment be an acceptable request?

I doubt it.
How long is left after the exam diet finishes?
He is still able to attend school for study purposes during the 5 week exam diet period.

Not unless you are proposing that the teachers don't get paid that term, they reduce their insurance, don't heat and light the building etc......

pianolessons1 · 05/11/2021 10:28

And you'll presumably expect support around A level result time?

RedskyThisNight · 05/11/2021 10:35

Unless it's in your Ts&Cs I can't see why school would allow this - or every parent would ask for the same thing.

Exams run to nearly the end of June and private schools normally finish at the beginning of July, so there's not that much time that he's not in school surely? And the school may well run a prom or end of year assembly.

Do you have to pay exam fees on top? If not, these will be covered by your fees.

TeenMinusTests · 05/11/2021 10:35

No of course you can't!
They will have built the exam terms into their fees somewhere.

(You could I suppose give notice to leave and leave at the end of the Spring term, then find another exam centre for him to take his exams. But of course then the school wouldn't need to provide any final revision resources or guidance at all for the summer term. eg No topic spotting between paper 1 & paper 2 maths for example, and no revision sessions on tricky topics etc)

ImUninsultable · 05/11/2021 10:38

No. You cannot.

BigWoollyJumpers · 05/11/2021 10:38

No of course not. Your circumstances apply to many parents. Your fees are annual, usually split into three terms. The fees cover the whole year regardless of absence, or length of each term.

Your final term invoice will probably have lunches pro-rated, and will have the deposit you paid when you first reserved a place deducted. It will also have exam fees added. The final invoice is a final reckoning of all fees due, and deposit returned.

RockallMalinHebrides · 05/11/2021 10:40

You really can't ask for this. I'm assuming he is taking his exams in school and teachers will be on hand to offer support if needed.

Your original contract will be until the end of term.

Thank you for your replies. It will be our final payment after 6 years, I will be glad when it's over.

You aren't serious are you?

CheesusTheSaviour · 05/11/2021 11:05

Don't expect the teachers to be there for give your child their results. Or to contest them if needed. Or to be paid...

ImUninsultable · 05/11/2021 11:20

You didnt need to send your child to private school.
You made a choice to pay for private school and you're on here moaning about it, trying to find a way to get a discount and saying you'll be glad when it is over. You're acting like you were forced I to this with no alternative.

Nope. You picked a private school. You need to pay for it. Stop moaning.

Comefromaway · 05/11/2021 15:41

Yes of curse you can.

And your child will not be allowed to sit their exams or if they do sit them receive their results.

(You do realise that even when the exams start the teachers/school will still be providing revision resources, exam invigilators, collating results and a myriad of other things)

MarshaBradyo · 05/11/2021 15:43

Not sure why this would be possible

Every parent could ask the same

Comedycook · 05/11/2021 15:44

You sound quite exasperated with it. I assume it was a choice you made and no one forced you into it. I can't see why you would think this would be a acceptable request.
LIZS · 05/11/2021 16:22

No you pay for the full term. If you don't you may find you paid a "returnable" advance fee when starting which they will retain in lieu. Worse they could exclude your dc at a critical exam period.

SeasonFinale · 05/11/2021 16:43

Is it 1 April?

BendingSpoons · 06/11/2021 20:09

I understand why it seems like not much teaching for lots of money, but in general exam students in year 11 and 13 are getting lots of the teachers' time, just slightly earlier in the year. So you are still getting as much 'value' as other years.
