How competitive is it to get into Tiffins Girls?

I was reading another thread about Henrietta Barnett which said it had 3000 applicants for 100 places. I was wondering if anyone knows the figures for Tiffins?

Dd is only in year 4 so it’s a way off still, and I’m fairly certain we won’t apply anyway as it’s quite a trek from where we live (W postcode) but I’m curious about whether it could be an option.

Do you live in one of these W postcodes

W3, 4, 5, 7, 13

Because if you dont there is no chance Im afraid. Unlike the Sutton Grammars which do have an Out of Catchment and In Catchment process unless you are in the inner catchment area

DonkeyInAHat · 25/10/2021 11:44

Hi.
Yes we live in W5.
Dd always gets excellent reports and she’s definitely very bright, but I’ve no idea how she compares to those who get into Tiffins.

Children do start tuition for the entrance exams in Year 4 and I think it’s important to not live so far away. Tiffins is a super selective so extreme competition to get a place

Many girls who sit for Tiffin and get in from are often offered placed at privates like St Paul’s and LEH. So top tier. Numbers sitting aren’t as high as in north London but that’s because there is more choice with the Sutton Grammars too. A well prepared very bright girl has a good chance.

HighRopes · 25/10/2021 13:00

The 11 plus forum has a whole Tiffin Girls thread with a sticky at the top that has all the numbers. Something like 2000 for stage 1 and then 600 for stage 2, for 180ish places from memory.

Quite a few sit it as exam practice, too, as it’s early. So that bumps the numbers up.

TotoroXX · 25/10/2021 13:12

Around 1400++ sit for stage 1 each year with 450++ to Stage 2.

What Totoro said - much better than relying on my crappy memory.

IME, the big thing for Tiffin was exam technique and timing. And not being phased by the waiting around and huge numbers of other girls.

DonkeyInAHat · 25/10/2021 14:19

Thanks everyone.
I think we probably live too far away for it to be a realistic choice. We live the opposite end of the 65 bus route (plus a short but annoying walk) so I think it’s nearly an hour each way. And I’d like her to have local friends.
I didn’t realise there was more choice with Sutton grammars (I know very little about the grammar system) but I think Tiffins is the only one we can apply to.

How does Tiffins compare to Latymer (Hammersmith) in regards to ability? I reckon Dd would easily pass their entrance.

Thanks totoro and highropes.

I will look on the 11plus forum. Thanks. I’d not come across that.

@DonkeyInAHat, did you check Slough and Langlye grammar school? I thought the train journey from Ealing Broadway will be more straightforward.

DonkeyInAHat · 25/10/2021 14:34

Thanks Totoro. I don’t know anything about the slough/Langley schools, but they might well be easier to get to. I’ll check them out.

Why not look at some 10+ papers. If she's in Year 4 now she'd be able to look at year 5 papers and see if she'd be able to cope. There are lots of schools that offer 10+ which provide a free sample on their websites so you can see the standard she'd need to be at.

And for Tiffin, you'd need to be scoring in the very very high 90s, working at a very quick speed, to get in.

The girl I know who got in was a) naturally bright (both parents been to Cambridge) and b) very fast processor. She did one hour of tutoring a week plus one hour of homework.

She picked things up very fast and didn't need lots of explanations.

DonkeyInAHat · 25/10/2021 19:41

Thanks.

I went to St Paul’s - but I wasn’t confident and and although I did well in exams I’ve not really reached my perceived potential. I think Dd is similar to me. She’s very clever but she’s not self motivated.

DFOD · 25/10/2021 19:46

I would be looking for somewhere that focused on her emotional development, confidence and self esteem - then the motivation and results follow - don’t put the cart before the horse.

Hogwarts21 · 25/10/2021 19:52

DFOD, I agree.

DonkeyInAHat · 25/10/2021 20:00

Thanks DFOD. I think you’re right. Our choice of state secondaries isn’t great though (Acton high or Ealing fields.) and neither particularly fit that bill from what I can tell.

OP posts:
DFOD · 25/10/2021 20:26

Then maybe ensure that she is engaged in lots of out of school initiatives and activities that nurture and build her confidence.

HighRopes · 26/10/2021 08:44

If she’s like you, then Tiffin shouldn’t be an issue, barring a bad day. My dd1 got offers for SPGS and Tiffin, and I know others who’ve had the same choice. Quite different papers, but there seems to be a lot of overlap in who gets through.

On DFOD’s point, I was looking for somewhere with excellent pastoral care as well as the fast-paced teaching and academic stretch that dd1 enjoys. But what that looks like is very different for different DC.
