Grey Coat catchment confusion

I’m probably being stupid here - do any Grey Coat places go to girls simply because they live locally or is it entirely church and language places?

They don't have catchments, but they have just about everything else that can go in to admissions criteria!

LAC and SEN places

Super selective language places (15, tie breaker for equal score is distance, if not all awarded, added to Open places. You can apply for both a language place and a faith/open place, and so if not successful for language you can automatically be considered for those)

They can award places on exceptional medical, social or educational need

Then there is a fair banding test (25% top band 50% middle band 25% lower band)

There are two types of faith place (CofE/other Churches Together denominations - within areas of the dioceses of London or Southwark) and open places

Within those categories, there are worship attendance categories (for faith places) and they are ranked siblings by distance and then non-siblings by distance.

  • weekly 5 years
  • weekly 2-5 years
  • fortnightly 5 years
  • fortnightly 2-5 years
Plus in all subcategories the child must have been baptised (or equivalent)

Open places the same, but all in together, rather than in sub categories like the faith places.

In practice, you either have to have been a very diligent church goer or live very close. You used to see plenty of girls in their uniform travelling in from neighbouring areas, but that's pretty rare now

Wow @SquirmOfEels thanks very much for taking the time to explain a very complex system!
