Large gap in reading and spelling ages discovered at school

Hi all, the school has contacted me to say that they have been carrying out reading and spelling tests and DSs scores, although nothing to worry about in themselves, are farther apart ( by 16 points) than they would expect so they would like to do some further screening to see if there are any issues.

Does anyone have any experience of this and have any idea what might be causing it? Trying not to worry too much!

Very common for processing disorders at 10 my DD had a spelling age of 8 years and a reading age of 16 years. She has a significant visual processing disorder.

Thanks @Lonecatwithkitten, I don’t understand what a processing disorder is! Is it like dyslexia? His scores are the other way round, spelling higher than reading ( which doesn’t make much sense to me)

Visual processing disorder - takes longer to process information you see than the average person.
I have the same kind of issues as my DD, but in the 1970s I got a diagnosis of dyslexia.
DD was diagnosed by a combined team of educational psychologists and behavioural optometrists. I was only assessed by an educational psychologist.
The most important thing is that she had an assessment that showed that in exam conditions her processing speed is well below average and that she needs extra time and use of a laptop to level the playing field.
